About us;
The club is called ‘Okea ururoatia’. It is a Māori name which means ‘Persist like a great white shark would until the end, strive to your utmost’.
It derives from the proverbial saying,
‘Kaua e mate wheke, me mate ururoa kē’ –Do not die lazy like that of an octopus which once caught gives up, but die like a great white shark which will fight until the bitter end. So no matter how exhausted you are or no matter the challenge you face do not let it be the boundary stopping you from achieving your goals. No matter in Taekwondo or in everyday l

Another year has flown by.
2023 was a great year. Hard trainings, tournament, colour belt gradings, black belt & dan gradings, great memories, personal achievements accomplished, stronger whānau connections and more.

Congratulations to members of our club who attended the regional open in Timaru over the weekend.
A fun and successful trip resulting in 6 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals. Ryan was acknowledged as the top black belt fighter and he was also presented with his Kukkiwon certificate.
A huge mihi to Timaru Olympic for hosting the tournament. Hosts beyond compare! Furthermore, to the other clubs both Taekwondo and different karate styles for entering and making the day even more special.

A huge acknowledgement to Ngata who graded to 1st Dan black belt over the weekend.
Words cannot explain the amazing effort, perseverance and indomitable spirit shown in preparation and during the examination.
Three solid hours of fitness, mental testing, striking, kicking, pad drills, basics, poomsae, grappling, self defence, weapon defence, one step/pre arranged, break falls, 40 rounds of fighting and board breaking.
It has been a blessing to be a part of your life and martial arts journey during the last seven years. Furthermore, having you and your whānau a part of ours.
Well deserved for a great martial artist.

Formal training is back underway for 2023. We have an exciting and rewarding year of martial arts training ahead.
