𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲

𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗩𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (𝗗𝗛𝗣𝗣𝗶) – 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝗟𝗟 𝗱𝗼𝗴𝘀
This protects against four important diseases:
· Parvovirus – a highly contagious virus that can cause severe vomiting, diarrhoea and dehydration, especially in puppies.
· Distemper – a serious viral disease affecting the respiratory, digestive and nervous systems.
· Canine Hepatitis (Adenovirus) – can affect the liver and other organs.
· Parainfluenza – one of the viruses involved in kennel cough.

Every dog should receive this vaccination as a puppy, followed by boosters to keep their protection up to date.

𝗞𝗲𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗩𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻
Kennel cough is a contagious respiratory infection spread anywhere dogs mix together.
Dogs most at risk include:
· Dogs that visit dog parks.
· Doggy daycare dogs.
· Dogs staying in boarding kennels.
· Dogs attending training classes or regularly socialising with unfamiliar dogs.

We offer kennel cough vaccinations to help reduce the risk and severity of infection.

𝗟𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘀 𝗩𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻
Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that can affect both dogs and people. Dogs become infected through contact with contaminated water, soil or urine from infected animals.
Dogs most at risk include:
· Farm dogs and working dogs.
· Dogs living in rural areas.
· Dogs that swim in ponds, rivers or puddles.
· Dogs exposed to livestock or wildlife.
Protection requires an initial course followed by annual boosters.

𝗜𝘁'𝘀 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸

Around 25% of NZ dairy cows will develop endometritis ("dirty cows"), which can delay cycling, reduce conception rates, and increase empty rates.
Metrichecking is a simple way to identify affected cows before mating.

𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀:
• Check at-risk cows (assisted calvings, twins, retained membranes, sick or thin cows) 2 to 4 weeks after calving.
• Whole-herd Metricheck around one month before mating.
• Batch Metrichecking throughout calving, ensuring every cow is checked at least once, 2-4 weeks post calving

New Zealand research shows that cows identified and treated through batch Metrichecking achieved a 10% higher six-week in-calf rate and a 3% lower empty rate compared with a single whole-herd check.

𝗧𝗮𝗹𝗸 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘃𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗱.

𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗸 𝗳𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘂𝗺
This August Eltham Vets was invited to contribute to a nationwide New Zealand milk fever study. We blood-sampled 156 clinically normal cows from two properties over six days while they were in the colostrum mob. 19 cows sampled on the day they calved had mildly low blood calcium despite showing no clinical signs. Of those resampled, all had returned to normal calcium levels two days later. Interestingly, five of the cows with low calcium were only 3 or 4 years old, an age group not usually considered at high risk of subclinical milk fever.

The cows will now be monitored using herd-test and LIC data to determine whether their calcium results are associated with any positive or negative effects on production and reproduction.

Overseas research suggests that not every short-lived drop in calcium after calving is harmful. In fact, some cows with low calcium on the day of calving subsequently belong to the higher-producing group. We will share the results of the New Zealand study when they become available next year.

𝗠𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘂𝗺 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀
Although calcium management is important around calving and during lactation, magnesium remains the number-one mineral to monitor in springer, colostrum and milking cows.

Serum magnesium testing is simple and affordable. It largely reflects magnesium intake during the previous four to six hours, so the timing of blood collection relative to feeding and magnesium supplementation needs to be considered when interpreting the results.

Insufficient magnesium is well known to increase the risk of milk fever, grass staggers and down cows. However excessive magnesium supplementation will also interfere with normal mineral absorption and gut function - this may also contribute to down-cow problems.

Is high somatic cell count or a sudden spike in clinical mastitis keeping you up at night? When treating mastitis, guessing which antibiotic to use is a bit like shooting in the dark.

𝗦𝗮𝗹𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗮 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗯𝘂𝗿𝗴
We are continuing to see an increasing number of farms in our area being diagnosed with 𝗦𝗮𝗹𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗮 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗯𝘂𝗿𝗴. Given the rise in cases locally, it's important that farmers are aware of this disease and its potential impact on their herds.

In cattle, 𝗦𝗮𝗹𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗮 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗯𝘂𝗿𝗴 can cause late-term abortions (particularly in first-calving heifers), fever, diarrhoea, reduced milk production, and, in severe cases, death. Prior to 2025, most reported cases were in the South Island, with only occasional cases in the North Island. However, the distribution changed significantly in 2025, with a notable increase in cases in the Taranaki region, particularly around Kaponga, Manaia, and Opunake.

In herds recently affected within our practice area, we have seen a range of signs including:
• Slipped calves/abortions
• Scouring cows
• Reduced milk production
• Cows that recover clinically but fail to return to previous production levels
• Deaths in severe cases
• Scouring and unwell calves

Salmonella Brandenburg is also a 𝘇𝗼𝗼𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲, meaning it can be transmitted from animals to people, where it may cause diarrhoea, lethargy, and other gastrointestinal symptoms.

A vaccine is available to help reduce the risk of Salmonella infection and can also be used during an outbreak to help limit the spread and severity of disease within a herd.

𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗳 𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀 🐄💩

We’re seeing plenty of calf scours. 𝗥𝗼𝘁𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗿𝘂𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗿𝘆𝗽𝘁𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗶𝘂𝗺 (𝗖𝗿𝘆𝗽𝘁𝗼) are the most common causes, but we’ve also seen some 𝗦𝗮𝗹𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗮.

If calves are starting to scour, get 𝗽𝗼𝗼 𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗵𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝘃𝗲𝘀 tested. Knowing what you’re dealing with makes it much easier to give the right advice on 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

It’s also a good time to go back to basics:

🐄 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗺 𝗶𝘀 𝗸𝗲𝘆. Test your gold colostrum with a 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝘅 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿 to check quality.

🍼 𝗣𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝘂𝗽 𝗰𝗼𝘄𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝘄𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘆 so the best-quality gold colostrum gets into calves within the first 𝟭𝟮–𝟮𝟰 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀. Ideally aim for 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝗼𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝟭𝟬% 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗳’𝘀 𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆𝘄𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 during this window.

🦠 𝗞𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻. Don’t have a dedicated teaching pen where infection can build up and spread from calf to calf. Clean feeding equipment thoroughly and use 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁 𝗖𝗿𝘆𝗽𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗼𝘁𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗿𝘂𝘀.

🐦 H5 Bird Flu – What Pet & Bird Owners Need to Know

H5 bird flu has now been detected in wild birds in New Zealand. At this stage there have been no detections in poultry, and the risk to human health remains very low.

There are some simple things we can all do to help protect our pets, poultry and wildlife.

🐔 Bird & poultry owners
Keep wild birds away from your birds’ food and water where possible. Watch for sudden deaths, unusual lethargy, breathing difficulties, neurological signs or several birds becoming unwell at the same time.

🐱 Cat owners
Try to prevent cats from hunting or eating wild birds and keep them away from sick or dead birds. If your cat becomes unwell after catching or eating a bird, please phone us and mention the bird contact before bringing your cat into the clinic.

🐕 Dog owners
Don’t allow dogs to investigate, mouth or eat sick or dead birds. Keep dogs under control around wildlife.

🦆 Found sick or dead wild birds?
Don’t touch or move them, and keep children and pets away.
