Kia ora, tatou katoa, FitforYou Whānau, with us on the edge of Winter, I hope you have some planned structured workout strategies in place for the colder months ahead. Clearly gyms are comprehensively great, offering a wide range of possiblities from cardio to plyometrics, through calisthenics, stretching into weight-based resistance training, but there are many other options for most of these outside the gym, too.

If the weather is kind, nothing beats a walk or a jog with friends at a speed where you can happily talk together or a great bike ride with mates for a cardio fix and seeing the lay of the land at the same time. If you have an E-bike, use it wisely, in ways which meet your individual needs and whatever kind of bike you are on, go carefully, wear that safety gear and BE SAFE. I always have fun interacting with furniture or props out in the natural environment as well, like the post below of the guy doing his push-ups under an overpass. Look for those fun spots which offer potential. You dont need to be a Parkour or Traceur specialist :)

For me, I am teaching 6 classes of Taijiquan a week and training for myself on top of that: Solo Form, weapons practice, partner practice, ball training, meditation. I am also working out in the gym using a range of calisthenics and weight-based routines which align with my Taijiquan philosophy. With the ocean temp now dropping significantly, my 4/3 wettie keeps me toasty for a couple of hours of hard-out bodysurfing and I mountain-bike on top of that, increasingly, now we have the fuel shortage.

As an adjunct to the above, my Myofascial Release Therapy Massage helps to keep me limber and fit too - remember, every physical endeavour is an opportunity for a workout, no matter how small - be aware of those little increments and keep stacking them up, one by one :)

Pullups ... the right way ...

The start of 16 unassisted Partial Chin-Ups without stopping. 13.3.26 - Vid: Sheridan Tuimaseve - Gym Manager at Anytime Fitness Gym, Gisborne Turanganui a kiwa. It is important to get that swing under control and after the first couple of reps I had it sorted. Some people cross their ankles which looks neater and helps to prevent swing but it is not good practice as it distorts the back and the pelvis region and leads to asymmetric pulling. Remember in Chin-ups and Pull-ups you are trying to switch on your back and pull from there, not only your shoulders and arms. Squeeze those shoulder-blades in and down and blend the pull with your arms into that squeeze ...

I do sets of 5 for my Chin-ups and Pull-ups - full ROM and Partials, to promote good technique and form, so your 5th Rep should be as good as your 1st Rep. If you do too many more, your form and technigue will erode. I also walk for 1min between every set to assist the absorption of lactic acid from the previous set. I leave my phone alone and I focus on each individual workout. Not sitting at the end of a set is a good start. So normally, I don`t advocate seeing how many Reps I can do without stopping. It can be a recipe for injury and certainly poor form. The Chin-up Challenge im promoting for this month of March is very much a one-off for some fun and curiosity. I am a mere mortal, however, I follow this guy from another calisthenics realm - FitnessFAQs, because his form is flawless and his explanations are clear and to the point. He is encouraging 21s here - 3 Sets of 7 Reps and his argument is pretty compelling. Check it out :)

3) How many assisted with a resistance band Chin-ups can you do without stopping?
4)How many unassisted partial Chin-ups can you do - sets of 5 reps - 1min recovery between sets?
5) How many unassisted full ROM Chin-ups can you do - 5 reps / 1min rests between

# All Chin-ups must be of good technical quality
# All attempts are witnessed or recorded ...

# To date my own current attempts have been:
4) 150 unassisted partial Chin-ups with 5 rep sets - 1min recovery between sets
