New Zealand’s rarest river birds breed on the Dart Valley’s braided riverbeds — and nowhere else in these numbers. We’re the only trek that gets you this close, on horseback, without flushing them off their nests.
What you’ll (hopefully) see:
🔸 Wrybill — the only bird on Earth with a sideways-curving bill
🔸 Black-fronted tern — Nationally Endangered
🔸 Banded dotterel, black-billed gull, South Island pied oystercatcher
🔸 + falcon, heron, s**g, black swan & more
This isn’t just a ride — it’s citizen science. Every trek includes a real bird count feeding a conservation dataset with the Routeburn Dart Wildlife Trust.
