CAM ZINK EXPLORES THE SEA 2 SKY 22/02/2023

British Columbia’s Sea to Sky corridor looks like it was made for mountain biking. The granite slabs are so grippy you can ride the impossible. Trails rip through forests of widely spaced trees and deep loam. Riding can feel like skiing on a powder day. On top of that, the landscape is so visually impressive that even the moments when you aren’t riding feel intense.

North Vancouver local Steve Vanderhoek is used to the supernature of BC. Cam Zink, who spent most of his life in the Nevada desert, not so much. Watch Cam get a feel for the place by taking on some of the gnarliest moves in the Sea to Sky, with a little guidance from his friends.

A closer look at the SPARTAN HP linkage.

Right away, you’ll notice the thrust and stability of a rearward axle path. Pair that with a 160mm Split Pivot design that’s fully active under braking and you’ll experience time-warping levels of control. For those about to blast, Spartan HP is the rocket ship you’ve been waiting for. Hope you brought goggles.

Over the weekend I was lucky enough to borrow one of the first Cycles Devinci] Spartan HP bikes to arrive in New Zealand to get a feel for sizing and more generally just how the bike works. Although two days is hardly enough time to get a really good feel for the bike, I’m already incredibly impressed. The mid-high pivot on the Spartan HP is a great balance between the stability of a high pivot with the cornering speed of a low pivot. I had no issues on the bike on tighter, more technical trails compared to my current bike, but when the trail gets fast and straight the Spartan HP really comes alive.

Aside from the obvious changes, the new Spartan has a bigger down tube and seat/chain stays that seriously improved the stiffness of the bike through faster rough tracks. Coming from downhill I often find that trail bikes don’t feel stiff enough through rough tracks for how I ride with noticeable flex on compressions and through rooty sections of trail. For the first time, the Spartan HP really feels like an enduro bike that rides like a downhill bike. At the same time however, the shorter chainstays and steeper head angle (than some other bikes) mean that the bike can still ride technical descents and climbs very well.

I’m totally sold on the Spartan HP as a perfect enduro race bike, reflecting the speed and technicality of modern enduro trails. Thanks to the team from for letting me have a sick weekend on the bike!!
