In my daily social media usage, I initially found solace in the quick hits of entertainment, often in the form of memes and light-hearted content. However, as time progressed, the diminishing satisfaction revealed a sobering truth about the state of our society.
This awakening provided a profound insight into the current state of humanity, prompting a strong emotional response. It's disheartening to witness the impact of our economy on marginalized communities, particularly Māori and Pāsifikā. The data speaks volumes – with 21% of households in these communities frequently running out of food, a significant increase from the previous rate of 14%. Even more distressing is the fact that 1 in 3 children in these areas have no food to eat due to financial constraints. These challenges are further compounded in highly deprived areas where the disabled population is disproportionately affected.
The mental health challenges faced by young adults are equally distressing. The data reveals a concerning increase in unmet needs for professional help, leading to heightened psychological distress among 21% of individuals aged 15-24. This distress can pave the way for the development of co-occurring disorders and a heavy reliance on substance use as a coping strategy. The repercussions of this reliance are profound, with reported harm to financial stability (10.8%), friendships and social life (8.5%), home life (8.4%), and work or study opportunities (6.5%). Additionally, nearly one in two adults (49.0%) engage in recreational substance use, contributing to a host of behavioral problems, emotional dysregulation, and disordered drinking behavior. The prevalence of substance use is further compounded by the alarming statistic that 121,700 individuals are using NOS in addition to excessive drinking, solidifying our status as one of the leading countries in behavioral problems and emotional dysregulation, with a tragically high rate of su***de.
Considering these stark realities, it's evident that immediate and comprehensive action is imperative to address the systemic issues perpetuating these distressing trends. The data underscores the urgency of this matter, emphasizing the critical need for meaningful change and support for those who are most vulnerable. So, I leave you with these questions to reflect on:
How can we address the systemic inequalities that lead to disparities in access to food and resources, prioritize the mental well-being of young adults, and work towards reducing the prevalence of harmful coping strategies, fostering a more equitable and inclusive society?
What steps can be taken by individuals, communities, and policymakers to create a more supportive environment for those struggling with mental health issues and substance use, ensuring access to professional help, and addressing the root causes of behavioral problems and disordered drinking behavior?
In what ways can we collectively work towards meaningful change, support those most vulnerable, and actively contribute to a society where all individuals can thrive and access the necessary support, regardless of their background or circumstances?
With Love,
Filly 😊
