🔥 Showcasing Healthy Active Learning at Koru School 🔥

Last Friday, CLM Community Sport alongside Koru School, were privileged to host and welcome international visitors Datuk Nicol David and Marian de Reyes, co-founders of the Nicol David Organisation in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Their focus is on “Empowering children through sports and education to reach their full potential.”

Visiting Aotearoa through the Asia New Zealand Foundation, Nicol and Marian were keen to experience Healthy Active Learning in action along with Veronica Thompson from the Asia New Zealand Foundation.

Principal Stan Whata, Associate Principal Jocelyn Tuia, and team leads Matilda and Laurance shared how Healthy Active Learning has positively influenced Koru School over the past five years—from professional learning and development for staff to stronger play opportunities during break times and student leadership training that empowers tamariki to get active alongside their peers.

Nicol and Marian could not help but leave with their kete full of information, inspiration and practical ideas to share and explore back in Kuala Lumpur.

🌿 Te Wiki o te Reo Māori 2026 🌿

This Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, CLM Community Sport is proud to support the Te Reo Towns kaupapa—encouraging our communities to hear, see and use te reo Māori in everyday places, including our sports clubs, playing fields, courts and sidelines.

Under the theme Ake, Ake, Ake – A Forever Language, Te Reo Towns celebrates the communities that have kept te reo Māori alive and invites us all to help it flourish for generations to come.

Te reo Māori belongs to all of us. Let’s make sure it is seen, heard and celebrated at mahi, on the fields, courts, clubs and communities of Counties Manukau—not only this week, but every week.

It’s good to see what our Healthy Active Learning Team get up to when they’re away.

They’ve definitely come back with their cups filled and kete of knowledge topped up 🥰

Nearly 170 people from across the motu came together in Ōtautahi this week for the Healthy Active Learning National Hui. It was 3 days of connection, learning, sharing and thriving.

The hui brought together the nationwide health and physical activity workforces who work alongside early learning services, schools and kura. Together, we focused on how quality physical activity and healthy kai and inu wai can support the wellbeing of tamariki and rangatahi.

Ka nui te mihi – thank you to everyone who shared their knowledge, experiences and whakaaro and helped make the hui such a meaningful time together.

🌺 PASIFIKA COMMUNITY SPORT FONO 🌺

What an awesome night of talanoa, connection and inspiration!

Last night, our team at CLM Community Sport brought together over 60 Pasifika leaders from across Counties Manukau — spanning sport, local government, community and key agencies — at the MIT Pasifika Community Centre.

A huge fa’afetai to our amazing speakers:

🤝🏽 Tagaloa Sonny Jr Samuela – sharing the global volunteer platform JustServe
💰 Mama J (Annie Johnson) – sharing practical funding tips and insights from her role with Foundation North.

A special thank you to the awesome Vaovasa Albert William Scott from Haddon House, who brought the evening together with his energy, humour and cultural expertise.

We’re excited to share this fantastic video capturing the joy, energy and inclusive spirit of Try Games at Bruce Pulman Arena.

A huge thank you to Kea Kids News and their talented young reporter, Alex, for coming along and showcasing this special day—where around 350 ākonga from Rosehill Special School and Kauri Flats School were encouraged to participate, have fun and shine in their own way. 🌟

🌟 Welcome to the team, Ash! 🌟

We’re excited to welcome Ashritha (Ash) Bagadam to CLM Community Sport as our newest Healthy Active Learning Advisor.

Ash is a primary-trained educator with experience in classroom teaching, community education and programme coordination across South Auckland. Most recently, she worked as a Community Educator with the Beautification Trust, designing and delivering environmental education programmes for tamariki, rangatahi and community groups. She also previously taught new entrants and Year 1 students at Favona Primary School.

Outside of work, Ash is a TikTok content creator who enjoys cricket, dancing, travelling, photography and wellness activities.

We’re thrilled to have Ash join our team and look forward to the knowledge, creativity and energy she will bring to our mahi with schools and communities.

🌟 Celebrating Movement, Inclusion & Achievement at Try Games! 🌟

Bruce Pulman Arena came alive for Try Games last Friday, bringing together around 350 ākonga from Rosehill Special School and Kauri Flats School for an awesome day of adaptive sport, movement and fun!

From boccia, athletics and archery to football, balloon badminton, inflatables and more, activities were adapted so every young person could participate, succeed and shine in their own way.

CLM Community Sport was proud to partner with the schools to create an event centred on inclusion, confidence, connection and celebrating every achievement.

Ngā mihi nui to the many volunteers and supporters who helped make the day possible, including AUT students, Botany Downs Secondary College, Papakura Rotary, Crime Patrol, Māori Wardens, local church groups and Co-Sign 🙌

And the perfect way to finish — every participant receiving a medal for giving it a go! 🏅

As the Rosehill Special School Principal, Gill Hedley beautifully summed it up, “Try Games created a space where ākonga could simply be their authentic self.” 💙

🌟 Celebrating Our 2026 Junior & Senior PE HALO Days! 🌟

Over the past few weeks, our team have had the privilege of bringing together kaiako from across Counties Manukau for our Junior and Senior PE HALO Days, all with a shared focus — strengthening quality Health & Physical Education experiences for tamariki. 🙌

Our Junior PE HALO Day explored the power of play, child development, movement progressions, junior athletics and practical ways to integrate movement across the curriculum.

Our Senior PE HALO Day focused on inclusive practice, student-centred planning, athletics using the āhei app, and how play can support belonging, wellbeing and engagement for older learners.

💬 Feedback across both days was incredibly positive, with kaiako valuing the practical, hands-on learning, inclusive approaches and adaptable ideas they could take straight back into their schools — including strategies to better support neurodiverse tamariki and diverse learners.

Ngā mihi to our facilitators, presenters and every kaiako who joined us. Your enthusiasm, collaboration and commitment to creating better experiences and outcomes for tamariki was evident throughout both days ❤️

Now we’re excited to see these ideas come to life in schools across Counties Manukau! 🏃🏽‍♀️🏃🏽‍♂️🤸🏽‍♀️
