🚵‍♀️ LOCAL ADVENTURE: FISHERS TRACK & MARTON SASH AND DOOR

There’s something pretty special about leaving the road behind and heading out into the Ruapehu backcountry. 🌿🏔️

Fishers Track is the kind of ride where the adventure starts as soon as you hit the trail. Follow the track through native bush, open farmland and wide Ruapehu landscapes, with the sound of tyres on gravel and plenty of fresh mountain air along the way.

There are climbs to work for, flowing sections to enjoy and plenty of moments where you’ll want to stop, look around and take it all in. And with an e-bike, you’ve got that extra boost when the track points uphill — so you can spend less energy battling the climb and more time enjoying the ride. ⚡🚲

But there’s more - Marton Sash and Door is along the way, you can ride through a piece of Ruapehu’s logging history, following remnants of an old bush tramway once used to haul timber from the forest. Keep an eye out for traces of the old tramway as you ride — a reminder of the people and machinery that once worked these forests.

So grab your mates, jump on an e-bike and go discover a different side of Ruapehu. 🤘

🏔️ LOCALS WEDNESDAY | GLACIER HUT 🏔️
Tucked away amongst the lifts and ski runs at Whakapapa is a little red hut with a BIG history.
Glacier Hut was built in 1923, making it New Zealand’s first purpose-built ski hut. It was built by members of the Ruapehu Ski Club, who had to carry the building materials up the mountain by hand and packhorse. 🐴🥾
At around 1,740m, it was the only building on the upper slopes of Ruapehu for 13 years. Imagine heading up the mountain back then — no chairlifts, no groomers, no warm cafés… just skis, a tiny hut and a whole lot of Ruapehu weather! ❄️
The six-bunk hut provided shelter for skiers, climbers and tramping parties, apparently, it could get cozy. On one occasion, it was claimed that 60 climbers squeezed into the hut for breakfast! 😳
As Whakapapa developed, Glacier Hut was eventually replaced by larger facilities and was used for storage. There were even plans to remove the little hut, but the Ruapehu Ski Club fought to save it.
Thankfully they did.
Today, Glacier Hut is preserved as a skiing museum, filled with old skis, clothing and memorabilia — and it is recognized as a Category 1 Historic Place.
So next time you're skiing past that little red hut, take a moment to look at it. ❤️
