Two close and exciting games were played on Saturday with the University Cougars AFL Club getting their first win of the season with a 17 point victory over the Mid Canterbury Eagles AFL Club and the Blues Football Club making it 1-all this year in their clashes with the Christchurch Bulldogs Australian Football Club with a hard-fought 16 point win in very windy conditions.

All four teams were missing key players and as we near the half-way point of the season things will start to heat up as these players return and the finals approach.

Longtime volunteer lensman Steve Nolan has once again captured the action through his telephoto lens - take a look!

Two contrasting games on Saturday with the Christchurch Bulldogs Australian Football Club having a convincing win over the University Cougars AFL Club and the Mid Canterbury Eagles AFL Club managing to keep their beaks in front and secure a narrow win over the Blues Football Club.

The Bulldogs roared out of the Kennel and took a big lead into quarter time, but the Cougars stormed back in the second quarter with five goals before the 'Dogs steadied in the second half and took the game away from them.

The Eagles suffered a couple of nasty injuries to two key players and we wish both lads a speedy recovery. The wind-chill was making temperature close to zero but the footy was red hot and a physical contest was played out until the final siren.

Another sunny day greeted us at QEII on Saturday, with a stiff northerly wind blowing straight down the ground in the first game, which thankfully dropped for the later game. Perennial ball magnet Josh Robles plays his 100th game for his beloved Mid-Canterbury Eagles this Saturday in their clash with the Bulldogs.

Starting his career in 2011 Robles quickly picked up the game and found himself in the middle of the action as the Eagles went from cellar-dwellers to Premiers and the envy of the league.

He made the NZ Under 20s and eventually the Senior Falcons, most recently wearing the Silver Fern at the 2024 Pacific Cup, coming up against PNG, Naoero and Fiji. He has also represented The Philippines at the Asia Championships in Thailand in 2025.

In between all these honours he also played two seasons with the Blacktown Western Magic in Sydney.

A decorated career that still has some stories to unfold!

It was a beautiful day to start Season 2026 for Canterbury AFL.

The University Cougars AFL Club and the Mid Canterbury Eagles AFL Club kicked the dew off the grass at QEII, with veteran Cougar George Read slotting two early goals before the Eagles kicked into gear and hit the scoreboard with six goals of their own to take a solid lead into the first break.

The Eagles kept up their work rate for the rest of the game, while the Cougars showed glimpses of what they can do. The final scoreboard read Eagles 18.11.119 to 5.3.33.

In the second game, the Christchurch Bulldogs Australian Football Club and Blues Football Club met in a grand final rematch, with the ’Dogs social media team lighting the fuse before the game with a bit of keyboard bravado.

Once the game was underway, it was a tight, low-scoring tussle, with the margin never more than three goals. Both teams were below full strength and were blooding some debutants, and the final margin of 14 points, with the Bulldogs victorious 7.7.49 to 5.5.35, was a fair result.

The Blues were gracious in defeat and will no doubt come out firing in Round 4, looking to get one back over the team they have defeated in the past three Grand Finals.

We now turn our attention to Round 2, where the Bulldogs and Eagles clash in the early game, with the winner claiming top spot on the ladder and building confidence for the year ahead.

In the late game, the Blues and Cougars will be looking to get on the winners list and build some momentum as they mount a finals challenge.
