The Milford Cruising Club would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Harbour Sport for funding our Term 1 Junior Sailing Program.
It was an amazing opportunity for our youth to step out of their comfort zones, put aside their devices, and experience the beauty of New Zealand’s waterways firsthand.
The program enabled a number of young people, many of whom would not otherwise have had access to sailing opportunities, to get out on the water. Participants came from diverse backgrounds and represented communities from across the North Shore and beyond the Harbour Bridge.
Ranging in age from 9 to 16 years, the sailors developed valuable life skills including water safety awareness, teamwork, resilience, confidence, and independence, while also building new friendships and creating lasting memories.
The program provided a safe, supportive environment where young people could challenge themselves, learn new skills, and gain a greater appreciation for the marine environment.
With high quality coaches, some with experience at international level, sharing their experiences with first time sailors certainly encouraged belief in themselves and hopefully was the first step in being passionate about engaging with the moana.
Some of the feedback from our young sailors included:
• “It’s quite adventurous and fun. It’s not like most sports”
• “I love capsizing”
• “Sailing’s fun”
• “It was fun helming and then capsizing”
• “It was pretty fun”
Sailing is an amazing experience that fosters personal growth with a hands on, outside of the classroom adventure in and on the water.
