Good Vibes Mangawhai

Sunday afternoon with Fish Boy 🤙🏼 five kahawai in just 30 minutes from the shore!

He was reeling them in one after another while others fishing nearby weren’t having quite so much luck. Then today he headed out on the boat with his mate and only managed one , so I reckon the big kahawai run is definitely winding up.

That 30 tonne, roughly 30,000 kahawai, has now migrated on, with maybe just a few lingering around. 🤙🏼

The mullet will be here soon, so we’ll be onto the next chapter of harbour fishing!

Pretty special living right on the estuary and watching all of this unfold. Fish Boy absolutely loves it here, mad keen on fishing and always gives away his catch to our lovely locals, from elderly neighbours to young families. We smoke plenty of it up and give that away too.

🐋 The orca were here last night!

The seals have been here during the week, feeding on the kahawai, and right now it really is a case of everyone’s on the hunt!🤙🏼

People are out with rods and reels from the shore, fishing kayaks are out, boats are out, and people are catching kahawai to take home and share with family and friends. Meanwhile, the orca and seals are hunting them too.

The kahawai have been in the Mangawhai Estuary for a couple of months now, as they do around this time of year, and they’ll soon move on down the coast. They could go any day, so enjoy them while they’re here!

And just a little clarification — I’ve seen comments saying we haven’t had kahawai like this here since the 1990s. That’s simply not correct. These seasonal runs happen around this time of year for Kahawai!
