It is with heavy hearts that we acknowledge the passing of Professor Damian Smith.
Damian has a been a constant supporter of our team from the beginning. Always keen for a cruise down to Palmy to support an event, teach a seminar, or hype up a grading. The first to jump in and corner one of our team if needed.
His passion for jiu jitsu and people was infectious, with his energy remaining on the mat long after he'd stepped off it. After a visit you'd often hear comments along the lines of "I have no idea what he said, but those techniques were sick".
There are not many who would get down on a restaurant floor at 11 PM on a week night in Palmy, after a steak, to teach the biggest guy in the room some of the finer details of the wrestlers craddle, but even the staff trying to close up couldn't stop Damian.
He always set a high standard, lifting everyone up and encouraging them to dream huge. If you were graded by Damian, know that you earned it and wear it with pride.
Our love goes out to the Smith family and the Gracie Allegiance Team New Zealand family. Know that we stand beside you now and always.
