Study shows exercise literally reverses age-related heart damage.
Research from UT Southwestern and Texas Health Resources demonstrates that regular exercise can significantly reverse the stiffening of the heart’s left ventricle, a common consequence of sedentary aging.
By engaging in a structured routine four to five times a week, study participants saw an 18% boost in oxygen intake and a 25% improvement in heart elasticity over two years. This regimen combined moderate-intensity workouts with high-intensity interval training and strength training, proving far more effective at restoring cardiac function than lower-impact activities like yoga or balance training alone.
Dr. Benjamin Levine, the study’s lead researcher, stresses that exercise should be treated as a fundamental pillar of daily hygiene to prevent potential heart failure. However, the window for these life-changing benefits is not indefinite; the study highlights that the heart retains the necessary plasticity to heal only if this active lifestyle begins before age 65. These findings, published in the journal Circulation, offer a powerful roadmap for middle-aged adults to reclaim their cardiovascular health and effectively undo the physical damage of years spent at a desk.
