MYTH BUSTERS #06

MYTH: “Anyone who can scuba dive can become a commercial diver.”

Many people are surprised to learn that recreational scuba diving and commercial diving are two completely different professions.

Commercial divers operate in demanding environments where safety, teamwork and specialist skills are essential. Every dive involves detailed planning, surface support, specialised equipment, communications, emergency procedures and strict industry standards.

Although the commercial diver training only takes months - it takes years of practical experience and ongoing competency to become a really good professional commercial diver. Like the people in our teams! 👊

At Bay Underwater Services, we pride ourselves in working with some of the best people in this industry, because when our divers go to work, our clients need to know they’re working with experienced professionals who put safety first.

Professional diving isn’t just about being underwater. It’s about training, discipline and doing the job right—every time.

MYTH BUSTER #4

One of the biggest misconceptions about commercial diving is that if the water is murky, the job has to stop.

In reality, commercial divers are trained to work safely in limited—and even zero visibility—using specialised procedures, constant communication with the surface, measurements, and years of experience.

Visibility doesn’t define a diver’s capability. Training, planning and teamwork do.

It’s just another example of why commercial diving is a highly skilled profession that relies on much more than what you can see.

MYTH BUSTER #3

One of the biggest misconceptions about commercial diving is that it’s all underwater welding.

The reality is that welding is only one small part of what many commercial divers do.

A commercial diver might spend one day inspecting marine infrastructure, the next carrying out vessel maintenance, assisting with construction, completing environmental surveys, undertaking salvage operations, or supporting emergency response work.

Every project is different, but they all have one thing in common—planning, professionalism and safety.

Commercial diving is a highly skilled profession that extends well beyond what most people see on television.
