Navigation Bylaw - Marlborough District Council 03/01/2026

Just an FYI to round out the day🪝

Marlborough's new Navigation Safety Bylaw (replacing the 2023 version) came into effect in late 2025, focusing on aligning rules with Tasman/Canterbury for better consistency, requiring the following from us boaties in the Sounds, including lifejackets (worn on < 6m vessels, carried on larger), clear vessel identification (name/call sign/rego and two communication forms, plus updated controls for activities like water skiing near wharves, balancing safety with practicality for all waterway users.

Key Changes & Requirements:

Lifejackets: Must be worn on vessels under 6m; carried (one per person) on larger vessels.

Vessel ID: All powered craft need a name, VHF call sign, or trailer registration displayed.

Communications: Two independent forms required (VHF, phone, flares, etc.).

AIS: Required for larger commercial/passenger vessels, aligning with Tasman/Canterbury.

Activities: Updated rules for water skiing, diving, and swimming near wharves.

This legislation brings Marlborough rules in line with Tasman and Canterbury regions, reducing confusion for visitors.
