Winter is the perfect time to learn a little more about polo before the fun begins this summer. Over the coming weeks, we’re breaking down some of the key shots and skills you’ll see on the field.

Winter Workshop #5: Neck Shot

Played underneath the horse’s neck, the Neck Shot is a forward shot used to send the ball across the horse and at an angle, rather than straight down the field.

It’s a useful shot for quickly changing the direction of play, finding a teammate with a pass, or creating a better angle for a shot at goal — all while maintaining forward momentum. It requires excellent timing and coordination between horse and rider, particularly when played at speed.

Next time you’re watching a match, look out for the mallet swinging underneath the horse’s neck — a well-executed neck shot can open up the field in an instant!

Winter Workshop #4: Nearside Backhand

Played on the left-hand side of the horse, the Nearside Backhand sends the ball backwards and away from the direction of travel. It requires good timing, balance and coordination as the player reaches across to the nearside and strikes the ball behind them.

You’ll often see it used defensively to turn the direction of play, clear the ball away from an opponent, or create a pass for a teammate. The angle of the shot can also be used to open up the field and quickly change the direction of an attack.

Next time you’re watching a match, look out for the rider reaching across to the left and sending the ball back behind them — a well-timed Nearside Backhand can completely change the direction of play!

Winter Workshop #3: Nearside Forehand

Played on the left-hand side of the horse, the Nearside Forehand is one of polo’s most difficult shots. It requires the player to reach across the horse and rotate their body while maintaining balance, control and speed.

You’ll often see it when the ball suddenly moves to the nearside, when a player is being ridden off on their stick side, or when the line of the ball makes another shot difficult or risks a foul.

Next time you’re watching a match, look out for the rider leaning across to the left and bringing the mallet across their body — when executed cleanly at speed, it’s an impressive shot!

Winter Workshop #2: Offside Backhand.

Played on the right-hand side of the horse, the Offside Backhand sends the ball back in the opposite direction to the player’s travel. It’s a valuable shot for turning defence into attack, changing the direction of play, or finding a teammate behind you.

The key to a great Offside Backhand is the angle. Depending on where the ball needs to go, the player can send it straight back down the line or open the shot up across the field. At speed, getting that angle right can completely change the direction of play and create an attacking opportunity in an instant.

Next time you’re watching a match, keep an eye out for the Offside Backhand — a well-placed one can turn a defensive situation into an attacking play in a single swing.

*Winter Workshop #1: Offside Forehand.*

Played on the right-hand side of the horse, it’s the most common shot in polo and is used for everything from long passes and attacking runs, to clearing the ball and shooting at goal.

It might look simple from the sidelines, but executing an effective Offside Forehand at speed requires excellent timing, balance and coordination between horse and rider.

Proof that this sport is fully about the people and the fun we have together.
