Wānaka Supervising Guide Tony “Grom” McCutcheon is an iconic New Zealand freeride pioneer and senior NZMGA ski guide who has been guiding with HMH since 1996. At the core of our legendary leadership team, Grom is prized by all of us for his incredible smile, skill, and the thoughtful and unassuming mentorship he offers to all he shares his work with. His 30 years guiding at HMH have been balanced in the off season with adventures (skiing, mountaineering and surfing) the world over; all while raising a family and building a home.
His many years of experience are augmented by an almost uncanny knack for finding the best powder stashes around! We love to follow his tracks, and to watch and learn from his exceptional ability to read terrain, benefiting from his safety expertise and decision making rationale at every turn.
This beautiful shot is from a recent father-daughter-day out heli-skiing: Grom and his fantastic daughter on the shred together! We love to see the face of such a legendary guide reflected in the goggles of his smiling daughter. 💛
To see our most experienced guides often sharing the love of heli-skiing with their children is a massive indication of how confident we feel in the safety of our operation, and of the trust we have in one another and all those we share risk with our work.
This next generation of backcountry prodigies were raised on mountain stoke, great decisions, and adventurous spirit. That we share our work with them is something we see as the ultimate sign of success at , and shows what a family business this truly is. 💛
