Yes - I was around when this went down and it was a massive drop - this one belongs in the record books that’s for sure 👍

When Paul Ahern pulled into the start gate of a Big Mountain Freeride comp in the 1990s the banter stopped. Ci******es dangled from lips, knuckles whitened clutching beer bottles, and all eyes were fixed on Paul. You never knew what to expect: big drops or goat lines at the outer limits of what is skiable. Ahern skied away from crashes that would put most competitors in the meat wagon. Paul never rag-dolled; he was strong enough to fight the laws of physics all the way down.

When Ahern stepped up to a world record 225-foot cliff above Lake Alta at The Remarkables in 1995 conditions were not ideal. At the top he was “scared as hell” but after waiting for about an hour for the clouds to clear he realised it was now or never. Ahern launched into history onto a flattish (38 degree) landing of springtime mush. His impact was spectacular; a freight train hit at 134 kph that blew a six-foot-deep crater at the equivalent of 37 Gs. Ahern was a little tender but otherwise uninjured.

Pretty much everyone who competed in NZ in the 1990s has an ‘Ahern’ story. The really scaring thing? They are mostly true…
