Apopo… ✨
It is with deep regret that we inform you of the tragic glider accident that happened on Tauhara Maunga, Sunday 31st May 2020.
A local pilot, and a female holiday maker from Wellington, lost their lives when the glider crashed into dense bush on the Maunga.
Due to the time of day, impending loss of light and difficult weather conditions, the bodies (tupāpaku) could not be safely retrieved until the next day. Police guarded the Mountain Road end, and a support person remained with the tupāpaku overnight.
They were safely recovered around 2.30pm, Monday 1st June and karakia was led by Ngati Tuwharetoa and shared with their whanau and friends before the tupāpaku left Taupo.
The glider was recovered and removed from the Maunga on Wednesday 3rd June and has been taken for extensive tests to determine whether mechanical issues contributed to the crash.
Our sincerest, heartfelt condolences to all who feel the loss of their loved ones from this tragic accident.
After being informed of the accident by local police and LandSAR, the Tauhara Maunga Trust attended a briefing Monday morning. Immediately following this briefing, a Rahui (protective restriction) was placed on Tauhara Maunga restricting all activity - including recreation, hunting, and food gathering and we ask the whanau to please respect this time by not accessing the Maunga over this period.
The Rahui will be lifted at sunrise 6.45am on Saturday 6th June 2020.
