Taupo Fishing

Big day yesterday on the water. I hope all you Hawks Bay boys are safe. Some of your water got smashed, The poor bloody Esk 😭 anyway I am sure some of you will travel over the hill to have a look at our side. Be safe.

Ugly ugly ugly weather. Was running out of options with wind and impending heavy rain so decided on this little trib. End result 50 fish for the 5 days. Love guiding this guy.

Who would have thought February would have produced such terrible weather. I have never had to try so hard yo get someone onto fishsble water in 18 years. We ended up (believe it or not) on the east coast for three days but our goal was a central Plateau river for today. All was looking great until early this morning when the heavens,( and I use that tern losely) opened up.
Wr had 35 fish to the net up until that point for three days and were expecting a 20 fish day, then a massive cloud burst came in and changed everything, sigh!.
We still got fish ,7 to be exact but it was a far cry ftom the 20 + I wad looking forward to.
Excuse my French but seriously, f**k the weather!!.
We are trying for a small stream tomorrow to Contreract the wind but to be honest it's probably going to be yuck.

Hey all.
The river we chose today was fishable but high. The crossings were nothing short of hideous and tested us to my limit. We picked up 11 of these with nothing over about 3.5 pounds. As usual we dropped a couple of good ones and that's fishing.
The weather is going yo suck soon and we will have to follow the good stuff around to stand a chance.

They say work fills your pockets but adventure fills your soul. What an amazing day we have had. We walked, bush bashed and in my case swum down the river 😒 today. It was high and slightly more Tannin colored than normal but we lost count of the fish hooked. We lost heaps 30 Seconds into the fight, it seemed they had soft mouths, the hook would just pull out, not under pressure. I've had it before on the Taupo rivers but not backcountry. Has anyone else experienced this??
Anyway, a few pics.

I knew we were going to get rain last night and that it might be heavy but wow did it change my game plan for today! Just pure ugly and a shocking start to 8 days.
On the bright side, we ate well and thanks to Darren I have a new toy to play with, being a 9.6 6 # Sage Sonic loaded with a MPX Scientific Angler Mastery line, spooled up on one of latest Hardy UD 5000LA reels.

A few Good Trout In the Middle Of No Where A friend and I walk into a very remote area of New Zealand and fish a beautiful little river with some great trout in amazing settings

I love guiding Darren. He is from England and has ties with Hardy's :) This stream is very difficult to fish. I think this was the 5th or 6th trout we had hooked. They all dove into the w**d or got tangled under the banks. They all busted off. This was our last fish for the day. It was a guides nightmare to land.
