Last weekend Northwind TKD was invited to the in house tournament in Tauranga at 'The Martial Arts Academy'

Te Aroha Taekwondo sent seven students, this was their first tournament, all students have only been training for 16 weeks and have been preparing for their next belt exam on the 26th of September , in 4 weeks time.

Nerves were high and it was always going to be a tough day in the office competing in another organizations event under their rules, in an unfamiliar location.

We took 10 students, two from Waihi, one from Paeroa and seven from Te Aroha.

Unfortunately with this weeks closure of the Gorge, there will be no Taekwondo Classes this week.
Yes, apparently the Gorge is open from 4pm, though this allows no set up time for mats.

Northwind will offering catch up trainings in October and November.

'Northwind Martial Athletics' is also looking people with a martial arts background who would be interested in official's positions at an end of year martial arts tournament. Positions will be remunerated.

New September Tournament
This is not the same one on the 29th August, don't get them mixed up.

Myself and two students from Waihi branch of Northwind TKD, went to the Saturday morning sparring training in Tauranga.
This was at the TMAA Gym.
2 hour training session, the students loved it and wanted to go again.
It was a different kind of sparring training, which would complement our current training and challenging students moto skill abilities. Giving a different dimension to what can be done when sparring.
I am confident these training sessions are suitable for beginner and Junior ranks.
If this sounds a bit like you, you will need to be prepared to go hard, sweat and push your mind body and spirit to the highest level. Flexibility is also key. Get stretching.
You will also need sparring gear and a mouth guard. When I am there I will have the Northwind Sparring gear. NB: ITF have strict requirements over correct sparring gear.

Next planned visit to TMAA will be on the 29th August for their Tournament, followed by there annual tournament on the 12th September.
Please text me if you want to do a Saturday morning training in Tauranga on these dates; 15/08/26 and or 06/08/26.

It's is understood that all students should be, over time assembling their on Martial Kit rather that depending on the Northwind gear.

Because Northwind doesn't push sparing until Green belt, no gear is really required until then.
Gear by rank you should start collecting in your martial kit

White belt.
- Practice Baton - for defence against practice

Yellow Belt
- Wooden Practice knife - for defence against practice
- Mouth Guard - for grading to Green belt. (boys Groin guard)

Green Belt.
- Middle Staff (1.5 to 2 meters long) (Optional)
- Tonfa (Optional)
- Short Stick (Optional)
- Full Sparring kit - Hand and feet Guards, Shin guards, Mouth Guard, groin Guard, and head guard. NB: if you are doing different organization events you may need different sets of sport fighting gear. Because of their rule requirements of each event.

Blue Belt.
- Wooden Practice Sword (Optional)

Red Belt.
- Rubber Hand Gun for Defence against

Black Belt.
- Fan (Optional)
- Cane (Optional)
- Long Sticks (Optional)
- 1080 or 1095 Carbon Steel Sword (Optional)

Please take note: All weapon training is not apart of the Taekwon-Do program, but rather apart of our 'San Udloe Jeonsul' program and the 'Korean Martial Arts Federation'

This has just been made available to us at Northwind.
Every student of age at Waihi is eligible. At Te Aroha, These Students are ready for patterns at this Tournament,

I will add others to this list as their patterns Improve in class. Every one does patterns, and Green belts and above are permitted to do Sparring. I'm pretty sure power punch and kick are destructions and I'm pretty sure they use plastic break boards unlike us who use wood.

Those doing sparring we will be doing special sparring training for that event on Fridays in Waihi.
