TOUGH AS: Police Minister Mark Mitchell took home a few injuries after playing a charity rugby game between politicians, leaving the field with two broken ribs.

The “Rumble in Russell” event raises funds for the Rugby For Life Charitable Trust and brought together politicians from across Parliament to compete against invitational rugby and netball teams.

Despite cancelled flights, MPs piled into vehicles and travelled 15 hours north from Wellington to take part in the fundraiser.

“It was a fantastic weekend for a really special cause,” Mitchell said.

Appearing on Newstalk ZB’s breakfast show, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon was surprised to learn of Mitchell’s injuries.

“Are you serious?” The Prime Minister said,

“No, you’re having me on. He hasn’t even bothered to text me though ... He must be ashamed.”

Luxon joked that politicians often overestimate their sporting abilities, saying, “We are legends in our own mind at this age and stage, right?”

The parliamentary rugby side eventually went down 22-10 to the invitational team.

Rugby For Life deputy chairman Riki Kinnaird said the charity helps under-resourced clubs with funding, volunteers and programmes focused on training, education and employment.
