Wrap around handles are also available for a more compact option. Inspiration behind the ViMo wheelchair:
ViMo's design engineer Peter Thompson designed and built the wheelchair for his late wife Ginny, to help her regain a sense of mobility and vitality in her life after a stroke. Peter's wife was an inspiration, and now Peter is inspired to help many others the same way.

We loaned Venturer Scout Charlotte a ViMo so she could fully participate in the National Scout Photography School camp this July and access activities that were previously out of reach. The smile on Charlottes face says it all.

The ViMo all-terrain wheelchair has been described by some customers as the Land Rover of wheelchairs. Tough, simple, adaptable, but above all, capable. Designed and manufactured in New Zealand means it can easily be customised to suit the individual. Book a trial today.

Adventures across Auckland with ViMo and Leo!

Cushla came to us looking for help getting her son back outdoors after a pelvic sarcoma meant he was being reduced to indoor living. After noticing a steep decline in his mental health due to being cooped up all day, we were able to supply a ViMo that was custom fitted to Leo’s size and needs so they could enjoy the outdoors unimpeded!

“Firstly, just being able to park the wheelchair right outside our front door, rather than at the letterbox has been helpful! Leo even fell asleep in the wheelchair on the first day, just shows you how comfortable and smooth the ride is!
We've conquered grass, gravel, bushland, even walking with two dogs is a breeze! I've noticed a positive difference in Leo's attitude, and I know it's made him feel less isolated. I'm a strong believer in the healing powers of the outdoors, so it was just amazing to be able to get out on our old walks knowing there weren't going to be any issues.”

They’re even planning on making it to Leo’s friends’ rugby soon when the weather permits – something that they couldn’t even think of doing beforehand.

Mental health, social health, physical health – all things that ViMo can help unlock by opening up the outdoors.

Let’s hear it for Leo!

How do you get a wheelchair over a Department of Conservation suspension bridge? Easy, buy a ViMo and the kit that allows you to temporarily narrow the ViMo. You need to be brave and have good upper torso strength and balance (someone willing to push). This photo was taken when ViMo wheelchairs were used in the 2016 Department of Conservation trial in the Abel Tasman National Park wheelchair accessibility trial. Merle Bradley is seated while her husband, Neil, provided the umph 😀

We love to hear stories of what the ViMo wheelchairs enable people to do. Here is what Jan and Rob have to say :-

"Searching the internet 6 years ago, looking for a robust, battery operated wheel chair for our daughter Lisa, we discovered ViMo and Peter and our lives changed forever.
Before this we were car bound or walks had restrictions to be level and smooth as one of us needed to push the chair. Now nothing is an challenge. We power along happily up hills, across grassed parks and uneven ground is no problem at all. The ViMo is so comfortable for Lisa. As the chair moves along the clever suspension allows for comfort and flexibility for Lisa's body and she loves it and so do we. We can set the speed to a dawdle, relaxed walk or a fast walk so we get exercise at the same time."

If you're in Greytown and looking for a lovely outing in the bush and over the suspension bridge then this is the place. It's wheelchair accessible but the ramp up to the bridge on the south (Featherston) side requires strong pushers or the powered version of the ViMo. Best to start from the Greytown side and either go over the bridge and return the same way, or have a car pick you up from the Featherston side after you've travelled over the boardwalk. Thanks to the Greytown Trails Trust for making this possible.

For ViMo users needing clear access to the seat to use "Banana Boards" for transfers we offer the Clear Access Kit. This is an optional accessory that enables the armrest and the diagonal link to be moved out of the way. The kits can be installed on one or both sides and can be retrospectively fitted.
