Manawatū A&P - Poultry Show Update

Good morning poultry fans!

Thanks so much everyone who has submitted entries to the poultry section we are hosting at Manawatū A&P. Phenomenal response, especially since it's 'off season' for poultry, thank you so much!

If you haven't sent your bird entries in to Manawatū A&P yet, you have a few more hours - deadline is noon today. But then we will need to draw a line as we will need to plan the set up and allocate cages etc. Once the floorplan has been completed, I will be emailing exhibitors with pen numbers and any other info you will need for bringing your exhibits in.

Don't forget you are able to enter sale birds up until 2nd Nov

And eggs - right up until 7pm 6th Nov. It is easier for us if you book them in advance (we can get labels printed etc) but we are still happy to take last minute egg entries - the more the merrier! We had about 60 egg entries last year - let's see if we can beat that number!

Sale Birds at Manawatū Show 7th Nov, Manfeild Stadium

We will have a Sales area at Manawatū Show. We have started getting enquiries from the public as to what heritage breed birds might be available. Good to see advance interest! 😊

If you have Sale birds you would like to enter, please get in touch

20% of sold price goes to club fundraiser so please price accordingly. Our current fundraiser is for cages for our junior and waterfowl sections – we appreciate any support you can give us!

Preferred sale bird types:
‘Purebred’ heritage females or breeding groups of good quality (chickens, ducks or any kind of domesticated poultry).
Crossbred females from good egg laying types are acceptable, although the public tends to buy purebred first.
No crossbreed males, sorry.

All birds must be in good health, free of external parasites, and described honestly. Sellers will be paid by the Club for any birds sold, within 1 working week of the show. Unsold birds to be uplifted by 4pm please so we can pack down the show in good time.

Our preference is to sell birds by the cageful, not as singles (simpler for our sales volunteers). E.g. Book a cage (XL cage for large breeds, or bantam sized for bantams / pigeons) and fill it with 2-3 pullets/hens or a breeding pair/trio. Max 3 birds per cage (depending on breed – 2 if they are very large, to avoid overcrowding). There is no charge for using a Club cage to display them on the day, we just need to know in advance how many to set up.

Birds in the main sales area must be grown out enough to be independent, ideally fully feathered, and not require heat.

Hylines – we have an agreement with a preferred supplier and won’t be accepting Hylines or Shavers from other sources at this time.

Name and contact details
Number of Club cages required and size(s)
What you are selling -Breed, sex(es), age, colour etc.
Total price per cageful.

Sale birds ideally to be brought in, to Manfeild stadium, on 6th Nov 1pm-7pm (preferred), or if coming to the A&P show on Sat anyway, on the morning of the show.

We have taken into account people might have been a little bit distracted having fun over the long weekend and have extended the entry deadline for Show birds at Manawatu A&P by 48 hours. You have until noon on Thursday.

Show classes for birds - Open & Junior Purebred classes form the centrepiece of the show, alongside a ‘Barnyard Special’ section to encourage everyone to give showing a go.

Mini Pop up Market underway at Oroua Downs Memorial Hall . We will be here until 12.30. Chickens, equipment, biochar (great for gardens) and even a trailer for sale. Come on down!

We have purebred classes to show NZ’s special breeds off to the public and also a special section for those beautiful or unusual looking ‘Barnyard/Backyard specials.’

Have you ever wanted to give poultry showing a go but didn’t know where to start?

Great news, the upcoming Manawatū A&P Show, has your back!
Show Day: 7th Nov, Manfeild Stadium. Hosted by Central Districts Poultry & Pigeon Club (bring birds and eggs in the afternoon/evening before).

We have standard classes for the purebreds (chickens, waterfowl, pigeons), for all level of exhibitor from the complete beginner to the more experienced. Including a Junior section.

Friendly judges will be there, to judge, of course, but also, encourage and advise. We will have lots of information up re the heritage purebreds and it’s a chance to chat to experienced breeders and show folks. Birds a bit raggedy as it is Spring? Don’t worry, we are all in the same boat and this will be taken into consideration. It’s good practise for the main (Winter season) and feedback at breeding time can be very useful.

Don’t have purebred birds yet, but have pretty backyard/barnyard type chickens? Brilliant! We have a Barnyard chicken section just for you. Book them in! Give them their moment in the spotlight 😊

Don’t have birds at all? Or want to start with something easy-peasy? Eggs! You can show eggs!

We have 2 areas – classes for the standard types (by type, colour, size etc) and the fun sections – painted decorated and displayed. Anyone can enter! Painting eggs is a great rainy day activity for children (and big adult kids too 😉). School entries welcome too! We have ribbons and rosettes to be won, with the creative section being judged by our Mystery Guest.
