🖤 ⚫️ Junior Squash 🖤 ⚫️

That’s a wrap on our first term of Junior & Intermediate Squash!

It’s been awesome watching our Squash Squad improve each week — from hand-eye coordination and hitting skills to court awareness and movement. The progress has been fantastic to see!

We finished off the afternoon with a small prize-giving to celebrate the kids and all the effort they’ve put in throughout the term.

We’re super proud of our whole Squash Squad and have loved seeing their confidence and skills grow.

Thanks for a great first term, team — we can’t wait to get back on court next term!!

We would also like to thank the team at Bream Bay Sports Trust for including Waipu Junior Squash in their “have a go festival”

Cheers to 150, to the mighty Yellow and Black - Waipu Rugby Squash Club

The Waipu Rugby Football Club

Rugby in Waipu began at the Braigh School in the early 1870s, the boys using bullock bladders for balls! Rules and team numbers were decided by the captains, with up to 18 a side being common. Interest in Rugby grew when a young enthusiast returned from a trip to Auckland armed with a ball and further knowledge of the rules.

Waipu adopted 15 a side in 1875 and by 1876 Waipu was one of 56 clubs in New Zealand. Early opposition teams were provided by Whangarei United Club, Whakapirau, Aratapu, Te Kopuru, and even Devonport (the team travelling down the coast by steamer!) By far the traditional rival to the ‘Waipu Lions’ club was (and remained) the ‘Carraway Cakes’ team from Maungaturoto!

Fun Fact : Club Colours were orignally navy blue with a thistle emblem on the shoulder and black leather "yoke". Further modifications ensued but eventually the team colours were replaced by plain gold in 1969.
