Dee Sarginson - Service & Contribution to Club & Netball

Maddy has been such an incredible contributor to Lake Hāwea Netball Club over many years, but what she has done for our club throughout the 2026 season has been truly next level.

Maddy has quite literally done it all this year. She took on the role of President, while also helping with the Treasurer and Secretary roles, coaching, playing and managing teams, coordinating with NUC, organising umpires, and somehow managing to keep everything running behind the scenes.

While Maddy has always been someone who has quietly contributed to the club in the background, this year she has taken that contribution to a whole new level. She has given an enormous amount of her time, energy and effort to making sure our club, teams and players have had the best possible season.

We genuinely would have been lost without her this season. The amount of work she has taken on is huge, and we are incredibly grateful for everything she has done — not just this year, but for all the years she has been part of Lake Hāwea Netball Club.

Maddy, thank you for your incredible commitment, your generosity with your time, and for everything you do to make our club what it is. This award is so incredibly well deserved, and we are very proud to present you with the 2026 service and Contribution to netball award.

Grandma Jo absolutely loved sports but she especially loved netball. She played throughout school and represented her region (Otago) in many rep teams and never missed an opportunity to cheer on the Silver Ferns. She shared that love of netball with her granddaughter (Maddy) throughout her childhood and continued to support her and the club for as long as she could. In 2023, this award was introduced to commemorate Jolene and her life-long love, passion and dedication to netball – and to honour a player who embodies those same qualities.

Outstanding Overall Player – Melissa Sawers

Melissa has been such an outstanding player and club member throughout the 2026 season, and this award is so well deserved. From the very beginning of the season, Melissa has shown an incredible level of dedication to the club. She turned up to pretty much every training and every game, often bringing her kids along with her, and never letting that stop her from giving 100% to her team. Mel has been such a consistent and reliable player for our B team, while also being more than capable of stepping up into the A team when needed. Her determination, focus and overall netball ability have really stood out this season. Down in the defensive end, her intercepts, tips and rebounds have been incredible to watch. She has a real ability to read the play, put pressure on her opponent and create opportunities for her team. But it isn’t just her ability on court that makes her deserving of this award. It’s the commitment, the effort and the attitude she has brought to the club all season. She has been someone we could rely on, and we have been so lucky to have her as part of our club and our teams this year. Mel, thank you for everything you’ve put into the 2026 season. You have been an absolute standout, and we are so proud to present you with the Jolene Fitzharris Outstanding Overall Player Award for Lake Hāwea Netball Club.

Rosie has been an outstanding shooter for the club this season and has more than earned the Sonya Bostock Most Outstanding Shooter Award. Her accuracy, composure and confidence under pressure have been a huge asset to the A Team, with her ability to consistently convert opportunities and put points on the board making a real difference throughout the season.

Rosie’s natural ability is matched by the work she puts into her game, and her shooting has continued to go from strength to strength. She has shown an impressive level of consistency, determination and confidence in the circle, becoming someone her team could rely on when the pressure was on. Her performances this season have been a fantastic reflection of the high standard of shooting she brings to our club, and we are incredibly proud to see her recognised with this award.

Marj moved to Wanaka with her family in 1976 and played netball for Oanaka. But if you ask anyone who knew her, what stands out isn't

Marj was a proud Mum and an avid supporter of her daughter Nicky, and she was on the sideline through it all : school netball, rep teams,
and later for Hawea and Hawea Masters. She was always there to help with fundraising too, especially the cheese rolls making, she loved the banter with
The girls and catching up on the gossip.

That's really what this trophy's about. It's not just a skills award, it's a recognition of the hard work and dedication it takes to be an outstanding defender.
Defence is the pivotal part of any team. It's what a win is built on. A great intercept doesn't just stop the other side - it lifts your whole team, shifts the momentum and gives everyone on court that little bit of belief to drive forward.

This year's recipient has shown exactly that kind of dedication all season - reading the play, backing up their teammates, and making the kind of defensive plays that don't always show up in the score sheet but absolutely show up in the result.
The Marj Morrish Trophy recognises the most outstanding defender of the season, and Abby has been an exceptional recipient of this award. Although she was unable to finish the final few games of the season due to personal reasons, her impact throughout the year was undeniable.

We were incredibly lucky to have Abby join our club and bring her strength, knowledge and experience to our A Team. She was an absolute force to watch on court, with her powerful defensive pressure, speed and agility making her a huge asset to the team. Her intercepts, tips, rebounds and ability to read the play regularly changed the momentum of the game and gave her teammates opportunities to build from defence.

Abby has been an outstanding player and a wonderful addition to the Hāwea Netball Club. We are incredibly grateful for everything she brought to the team this season and are so pleased to recognise her as our Most Outstanding Defender.

The Edna Capell Strivers Award recognises someone who consistently strives to be better, gives their best, and makes those around them better too. This season, Ava has embodied everything this award represents. As captain of our C Team, Ava naturally stepped up as someone her teammates could rely on. She consistently encouraged those around her, offered support and advice during games, and helped lift the team through quarter and halftime breaks. She brought that same attitude to training, always willing to help, encourage and make sure those around her felt involved. Ava has shown incredible determination, consistency and commitment throughout the season. Week after week, she has strived to improve her own game, support her teammates and contribute positively to the club. Her attitude, work ethic and genuine care for those around her have made a huge impact on our C Team and the wider Hāwea Netball Club. Ava is exactly what the Strivers Award represents — someone who never stops striving to be better, while lifting everyone around her along the way. We are incredibly proud to recognise her with this award.

“The Humphrey Family Trophy is awarded to the most valuable midcourter of the season. The midcourter is the driving force of the team, guiding the ball through the court and providing the vital link between defence and attack. This role requires exceptional leadership, vision, determination and teamwork. To be awarded this trophy is a recognition of the outstanding support, direction and drive you have consistently demonstrated throughout the season. Your contribution has enabled your teammates to perform at their best and has played a significant part in the team’s success.”

McKayler has embodied everything this trophy represents. She has been an exceptional leader and a vital link between our defensive and attacking ends, using her vision, determination and understanding of the game to drive the team forward. Her ability to read the play, create opportunities and support those around her has made her an incredibly valuable member of our A Team. McKayer has also been a wonderful asset to the wider Hāwea Netball Club. She brings positivity, reliability and genuine enjoyment to everything she does, and is an absolute joy to have both on court and around the club. We have been incredibly impressed with her this season, and she is a very deserving recipient of the Humphrey Family Trophy.
