And the Audioculture post as mentioned in the workshop. A fascinating read about the quintessential kiwi last waltz of many a dance and how it started life as a duple-time lullabye.
Goodbye, Hello: the evolution of ‘Now is the Hour’ - Article | AudioCulture Releases of Now is the Hour / Pō Atarau’ by John Rowles (France: Stateside, 1968), the Amorangi Boys of Rotorua (NZ: Kiwi, 1960), and the Rangatira Māori Opera Group (NZ: Salem, 1965). Great workshop today: Musicality III-Engaging the Music!!
The greatest thing, I think, is being a dancer and talking with other dancers about how we actively respond to music. Sometimes it's a conscious response but a lot of the time it is intuitive and so to be able to discuss this with other dancers and finding words to describe the feeling is very exciting!
Too busy (again!) enjoying myself to take photos of the actual dancing but did remember the afternoon tea this time (thank you Gay!)

Please note the corrected times for recent event listings, including the workshop this weekend (starting 2:30pm) and block courses starting next week (at 7pm).
Because I created the event listings while in Adelaide, Facebook kindly converted the timings from South Australia time zone for me!

Workshop next weekend! What makes a song a dance? Learn to hear all the different layers in the music and think about how to move to them.
(... and yes the correct time is 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.!!)

It's been a busy week but here are the photos of last weekend's dance: New Zealand Music. It was a great night, and well done to the quiz winners (which was everyone in one way or another, as it turned out!). Excellent demonstrations from Ann and George, as well as Karen repeating her demonstration dance, by popular request.
Thanks again to Gay and team for the fabulous New Zealand-themed table settings and supper. (Once again, all the supper had gone and only the diehard dancers remained when I'd remembered about taking photos!)

Looking forward to the Absolute Beginners class and the next course of classes starting this Wednesday! If it's your first time to the studio we're at 110 Hutt Rd, Kaiwharawhara (just south of the Kaiwharawhara Rd/Ngaio Gorge Rd intersection). It's the white and blue building (pictured). Parking is available to the right of the building (but along our wall only) as well as at the Tile Space across the road (both when after hours). And there is plenty of street parking on Kaiwharawhara Rd, or Westminster St by Animates. (Word is to avoid the Spotlight car park, however, or you will be fined.)
We're also on the No.1 and several other bus routes, with the stop right outside headed south (Stop 5486, Hutt Rd, opp. School Rd) and across the road headed north (Stop 5028, Kaiwharawhara-Fore St).
Come up to Level 2 and Gay, my teaching assistant, and I look forward to greeting you!

What a great way to start the dancing year! I hope you all (who came) enjoyed the taster of things to come in the classes ahead for the year. Great to see you new people, formerly new people and the very familiar people all together in the one class.
If you missed out, not to worry. We'll be doing similar (although not quite so intense!) from next week onwards. See the event listings for details of different courses: Introductory Classes at 6pm, Intermediate at 7pm, and Technique/Advanced Class at 8pm.
The banana cake, supplied by Gay, was keeping her high standard, should you want to know!
(NB Photo from previous social event. Once again I was too busy teaching, dancing and generally having fun to take photos!!)

This week has certainly been Summer and a great way to start the year (although maybe too much of a good thing for some?!). Only twelve days until private lessons start again (22 January) and an Open class to get the year really going on 28 January. Look out for following posts with further details.
(No, this is not my garden although I wish it was, along with the staff who lovingly design and tend it! )
And because 9 January is International Choreographers' Day(!!), here is a nod to the dance master who invented it (not the creation of movement but the notation of it, as the etymology of the word suggests), Pierre Beauchamp https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pierre_Beauchamp
