Waka Ama Aotearoa NZ Sprint Nationals - Important Event Updates for 2027 and beyond 👇
Following significant growth in the 2026 Sprint Nationals, a number of important updates will be introduced from 2027 onwards. These changes are designed to strengthen safety, improve event flow and planning, and support the continued growth and long-term development of the Nationals.

The Waka Ama Safety Officer is someone who is experienced with water safety. All clubs should have a Safety Officer to ensure the waka and resources are up to Waka Ama Aotearoa NZ standard for the safety of kaihoe. With a simple guide to follow, some of the points below help clubs in appointing a Waka Ama Water Safety Officer.
Some responsibilities include:
- Waka equipment maintenance
- A logbook or contact sheet of Waka out on the water at any time
- Ensuring compliance with New Zealand Maritime Rules and Local Bylaw
- Checking the weather and communicating conditions to club paddlers
