THE CENTRE AWARDS

It was a big day for JBC on Sunday. Not only did we host the Centre Awards event, but the club was prominent among award recipients.

But first, a huge thanks to Kaaren and the JBC team that worked so hard, largely behind the scenes, to make the day such a success. It was truly a magnificent effort that reinforced the club’s reputation as a friendly and efficient host.

The Centre has reported on the overall Awards event, so here we will focus on JBC’s successes over the season.

If we should highlight anything it’s this – both Johnsonville Women and Johnsonville Men won their respective Club of the Year awards. Those awards are determined from performance points accrued throughout the season. It may not be the first time a club has won both the men’s and women’s awards (we haven’t gone through the records to check) but it’s certainly a great achievement.

Many performances contribute to determining Clubs of the Year, both by individuals and teams. In terms of individual performances throughout the season, we could not have done better than Dale Rayner winning Women’s Player of the Year and Wayne Coleman winning Men’s Player of the Year.

It is not only winning performances that contribute to Women’s and Men’s Clubs of the Year, but here is a breakdown of our winners.

Representatives
Johnsonville players who represented Wellington during the season were – Phil Todd, Wayne Coleman, Grant Wakefield, Paula Meredith, Gill Oliver, Lui Hare, Leslie Seabright, Debera Dean, Terry Dean, Brendan McDonnell, Dale Rayner, Kaaren Guilford, Lynette Campbell and Rod Leitch (Selector/Manager).

Coach of the Year
Brady Amer’s enthusiasm for any task he undertakes is well known. He has taken that approach to coaching, and this has been recognised with the award of Coach of the Year.

CAPS
A well-received innovation at the Awards was the presentation of caps to players who have represented Wellington over 100 times. The Centre has reported on this but it’s worth echoing GM Blake Signal’s praise of Ross Gillett, for the huge amount of research and compilation work he did to bring this project to fruition.

Johnsonville was, of course, represented. Most readers will know them all but for the record in the photo they are left to right back row – Grant Wakefield, Brendon Gibson, Jim Scott, Rod Leitch, Rob Ashton. Front row Kaaren Guilford, Bruce Henderson, Paula Meredith, Rex Knox. (Dale Rayner not present.)

JBC MEN SHINE AT FINALS WEEKEND

It was unusual to not see any JBC women’s teams competing in the, just completed, end of season Bowls Wellington Finals Weekend. However, our well supported, men’s teams did an excellent job of keeping JBC at the sharp end of the competition.

Going into the weekend we were represented in the final of the junior singles, and the semi-finals of the singles, pairs and triples.

On Saturday, Phil Todd and Wayne Coleman played two solid games to win the pairs, beating the highly regarded Ben King and Ian McLeod in the final. Terry Dean, going straight into his final, had an excellent win over his Lyall Bay opponent, Brian McDermott.

On Sunday, Phil and Wayne were joined by Brendon Gibson, a formidable team indeed, for two excellent wins to win the triples. It was then down to the last men’s game of the event. To reach this final, Logan Amer had a solid win in the semi against Nigel Burn of Karori. His opponent in the final was the highly regarded Neville Rodda of Naenae, who had beaten Finbar McGuigan in the semi. It was a tight and tense game, well worthy of a final, with the outcome resting on Logan’s last bowl – and a narrow loss at 20-21.

So – overall a very satisfactory weekend for our JBC men.

JOHNSONVILLE CLASSIC INVITATION TRIPLES – DAY 2

First, thanks to club member Kerry Walsh of Motor Doctors, Thorndon, Ngaio and Johnsonville whose generous sponsoring of this event allowed for a prize pot of $3300, plus a lucky team prize.

Day Two was pairs and singles day, with teams that were in the leading bunch after the triples on Day One holding on to the top spots for the second day. At the end of the day, it was the composite team of Ray Marrtin, Robbie Bennett and Sam Allison who maintained their unbeaten run to win overall. Runners up were the Paekakariki team of Kurt Burgess, Nicky Morgan and Geoff Bovey. Third were Stokes Valley’s John Brien, James-Cameron Powell and Jordan Keene. Not far behind, having had three draws over the two days, was JBC’s Grant Wakefield, AJ Cronin and Brent Ahern.

JUNIOR CLASSIC – DAY 2

The weather Gods were kind, and a great day of bowls was had by the twenty-six teams competing on Day 2 of the Johnsonville Invitation Junior Classic Fours. As well as bragging rights for winning the trophy, there were cash prizes to be won by the top six finishers.

When the dust had settled it was a local team that took out the trophy – Mostly Supervised – (in player order) Quinn Strong, William Goldstein, Stephen Prosser and Jonathan Goldstein. Runners up were The Geralds (highly competitive youngsters) Jordan Keene, Jayden Burns, Hannah Dawson and Lily Signal. Then followed Raumati Blues, JBC Blues, Draw Masters and Hutt BC.

There was a special prize for the Roaring 20s Ladies, who added a touch of glamour, and stayed in costume for the entire event.

It would be fair to say that this event has become one for junior bowlers to mark in their calendars as “not to be missed”.

A very well deserved thank you to all the JBC people who worked so hard to make this event a success. And a grateful thanks to our sponsors Ken Brown of Bowls Specialists Ltd and Super Liquor, Johnsonville.

WELLINGTON ON A GOOD DAY FOR THE WEDNESDAY AFTERNOONERS

To finish what has been a weather affected season, the Wednesday afternoon players certainly had one out of the box today.

A game of twelve ends (we don’t know or care who won) was followed by afternoon tea.

Here they are.
(Missing are regulars Alwyn, Les and Carol, who were off playing in the delayed Janet Lynch today.)

Apologies to Annette, hidden in the shadow of Pat. The photographer (me) should have noticed and made sure the sun was shining on her.
