Wellington Iaido Club trains Tues & Sat at 13 Vennell St, Brooklyn. Iaidō is a Japanese martial art focused on drawing and cutting with the Japanese sword.
Iaidō is a Japanese martial art focused on using the sword, drawing and cutting in a single stroke. It is practiced in prearranged movements called kata, against an imaginary opponent. Iaidō was originally practiced by Samurai for self-defence or even assassination. Over past last four hundred years these sword techniques have developed into a Dō. A way to self improvement, character building and
moving meditation while teaching effective use of the Japanese sword. Iaido is also a lot more than just drawing a sword. There are many cultural, fitness and spiritual benefits to practicing iaido such as:
* Learning some Japanese language.
* Learning Japanese History and Culture.
* Learning more about yourself by building confidence and character through your training.
* Iaido can be practiced as a form of moving meditation.
* Learning about the Japanese sword.
* Low impact fitness. The name iaidō (居合道) comes from an old Japanese saying:
Tsune ni ite, kyu ni awasu
常に居て、急に合わす。
“Constantly present, swift in response”
Training is available twice a week and led by Cam Findlay, 2nd Dan Iaidō. Beginners classes are Tuesday 6-7pm and there is a further session Saturday 3-5pm for those wanting to progress faster.
