This article reflects what weβve experienced at OJCC in recent years.
Our player numbers remain steady and are even increasing in some grades, but we are facing the same struggle clubs all over the country have in finding volunteers.
We are lucky in that we havenβt struggled much for volunteer parent coaches, which is fantasrtic, but we really need more help in the more 'boring' administrative roles.
If community sports in New Zealand continue to struggle for volunteers, we risk moving to a more commercial model like is being seen overseas. This means participation costs are high and the overall goal stops being enjoyment and developing players, and turns instead to turning a profit.
You donβt need to know much about cricket to coach year 2-3 level, and we provide lots of support!
In addition, we are very keen to fill a few roles on our committee for the 25/27 season.
These are:
Grade coordinators for years 2 and 3 - this role involves putting teams together after registrations close and being the key point of contact between the committee and your gradeβs coaches, managers and parents.
Events coordinator
The main tasks for this role are organising team photos and end of season prize giving, however there is scope to do more in this role. We would love to hold club open days and fun days, we just need someone to help organise!
This role could potentially sit outside the committee
Coaching coordinator
We would love someone to be our main point of contact for coaches. They will ensure all our volunteer coaches are appropriately vetted and trained and registered with Cricket Wellington, organise coach education, arrange professional coaching where needed, and set up pre season and off season training programmes. This could suit someone who wants to be involved in coaching but isn't keen to coach their own child or cannot commit to being available for regular weekly practices.
βItβs the same six peopleβ: Sports clubs warn they may fold amid volunteer crisis
Says the chair of one major club: βWe have about 1100 kids so thatβs more than 2000 parents. But if you have a working bee, four people turn up.β
