The Classic - Te Whanganui a Tara

The Classic - Te Whanganui a Tara 'The Classic' is a Individual, all levels, CrossFit Competition like no other to be hosted by CrossFit Central Wellington on the 21st of September 2024

The Classic is a individual CrossFit Competition hosted by CrossFit Central Wellington on Taranaki St in Te Whanganui a Tara (Wellington, NZ). It is a Competition like no other where male and female athletes will complete two scored events together and then be graded into three different divisions. Division 1, 2 and 3 will represent movements and weights encountered in standard CrossFit competitions reflecting RXD (Division 1), Intermediate (Division 2) and Scaled (Division 3). The placement of athletes into divisions following the grading events will be at the discretion of 'The Classic' organisation crew. Following the grading events (which will contribute to overall scores) the athletes will complete two more events in their delegated divisions before the field is cut. These shortened fields will complete a qualifying final then the field will be cut again to TWO athletes in each division who will face off in the ‘winner takes all’ head to head final to try and become the undisputed Classic Champion of Te Whanganui a Tara. Registration for this event is OPEN NOW, athletes can register by clicking on the sign-up link and paying their fees ($80) to confirm their registration. Entries close 7:30pm Tuesday the 10th of September. SIGN-UP LINK: https://forms.gle/eJLDvi1hteTVNoNR6

This is going to be one event not to be missed in the Capital… Limited spots so don’t miss out. YOU DO NOT NEED TO BELONG TO A CROSSFIT AFFILIATE!

That was an amazing day on Saturday! Thanks to everyone that came down to support! The crowd at times was LIT!

Congratulations to everyone that that competed in The Classic - Te Whanganui a Tara - We wanted this comp to stand out, to be different and we think we achieved that! Things went off without a hitch and the planning and ex*****on was flawless thanks to an awesome team!

Well done to our winners! To have a male and female going head to head in each of the divisions showed the balance in the programming worked. The divisional split after grading saw 18 athletes in Division ONE, 29 in DivisionTWO and 11 in Division THREE and below are your 6 athletes that made it through to the head to head final in each division...

Division ONE
Champion: Abby Webb (CCW)
Runner up: Caleb Baker-Cousins (Instinct)

Division TWO
Champion: Antony Harvey (Tonuitanga)
Runner up: Jaime Fleming (Cave Fitness)

Division THREE
Champion: Jeremy Tavendale (Tonuitanga)
Runner up: Rachael Lockhart (CCW)

Along with all these winners we would also like to thank all of those athletes that competed and we hope you all enjoyed the comp!

Thank you to all our volunteers on the day it’s you guys that make the comp into what it is. I could sit here and thank all of you individually for your roles but you all excelled and we could not have done it without you. I will go on to name Te Rua, Jonnie and Nicole who have driven this comp from the get go and having you three to help pull this off makes life so much easier.

Thank you also to our sponsors MakeCo Building and Carpentry and Awhi Yoga and Wellbeing, along with lululemon NZ, you guys made the prizes legendary, so thanks!

Thanks also to Nathan who was behind the lense all day taking shots in one hell of a gruelling task for one man - event photos still to come. Also thanks to the other half of the media Team Patyne laying down the reels throughout the day!

Another shout out needs to go to Mike Parker who was the man behind the curtain putting his ScoreFlex leaderboard to the ultimate test in a new format of competition, you came in clutch for us there so we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your efforts, we know you spent some time on this.

All in all. We loved this event. AND we plan to run it back! Maybe in a new two day format? Whatever it is we hope to see you all again in 2025.

Thanks again to all involved.

Death by (1 min rounds)
Clean
+
BMU

No Cap

Equipment;
Division 1: Start at 1 rep, 70 / 47.5kg Barbell, Bar muscle up
Division 2: Start at 2 reps, 60 / 42.5kg Barbell, Chest to bar
Division 3: Start at 3 reps, 50 / 35kg Barbell, Pull-up

Workout Brief
The athlete will begin standing facing their barbell, at 3,2,1… Go! The athlete will pick up the barbell and complete their clean(s), once finished they will move to the gymnastics bar and complete their BMU (or C2Bs or pull-ups), once completed they will rest for the remainder of the minute. Each round after that they will add 1 rep of each movement. This will continue in this fashion starting with the cleans and then the BMU (or C2B or Pull-up) until they cannot complete the prescribed amount of work within the minute window.

Notes
The reps must be completed within the minute window for the athlete to continue, push outs after the buzzer will not count.

Score
Score is number of rounds + reps completed. This is a head-to-head final so the athlete that does not complete the prescribed work first in the minute window will be runner up and the other athlete will be the champion.

This event is winner takes all.

Head-to-head Final Movement Standards:

Clean: The clean may be a muscle, power, split or squat clean. The barbell must go from ground to shoulders in one movement. At the top the clean the barbell must be in front rack with the elbows in front of the barbell with the hips and knees fully extended and the feet in line.

Pull Up: This is a standard pull-up. Dead hang, kipping or butterfly pull-ups are allowed, as long as all
the requirements are met. The arms must be fully extended at the bottom. At the top, the chin must clearly pass above the horizontal plane of the bar.

Chest to bar: This is a standard chest-to-bar pull-up. Dead hang, kipping or butterfly pull-ups are allowed, as long as all the requirements are met. The arms must be fully extended at the bottom. At the top, the chest must clearly come into contact with the bar below the collarbone. Athletes may use the box provided to get up to the bar but must not use the bar directly above the box.

Bar Muscle Up: For the bar muscle-up, you must begin with, or pass through, a hang below the bar with arms fully extended and the feet off the ground. Kipping the muscle-up is acceptable, but pullovers, rolls to support or glide kips are not permitted. The heels may not rise above the height of the bar during the kip. At the top, the elbows must be fully locked out while the athlete supports himself or herself above the bar with the shoulders over or in front of the bar. Athletes may use the box provided to get up to the bar but must not use the bar directly above the box.

Notes
The DB or KB cannot be dropped from above the knee, if the athlete does then they must stop what they are doing and return to touch the wall before they can continue. All divisions and both genders will use the 50cm box.

Score

E.g., if the athlete had 3 KB box step overs, the KB carry and to touch the wall remaining to finish the prescribed work then the score would be 7:05.

This event is worth double points.

Last Chance Qualifer Movement Standards:

The DB cannot be dropped from above the knee of the athlete, if the athlete does so then they must stop what they are doing and return to touch the wall before they can continue the workout.

Once the box work is completed the athlete must return to the KB to the designated area. The KB cannot be dropped from above the knee of the athlete, if the athlete does so then they must stop what they are doing and return to touch the wall before they can continue the workout.

Kettlebell Box Step Overs: The Kettlebell box step-over begins with both feet on the ground and the KB carried by the athlete. When stepping up and over, both feet must make contact with the top of the box. There is no requirement to stand tall while on top of the box. The Kettlebell cannot touch the box during the rep. The rep will be credited when the athlete’s feet touch the ground on the other side of the box. The athlete can hold the KB however they prefer. The KB cannot be dropped from above the knee of the athlete, if the athlete does so then they must stop what they are doing and return to touch the wall before they can continue the workout.
