Meet Grace 💜 our mighty Hypha member from the mighty north.

We asked her what she loves about CrossFit and she said one word that stuck with us - confidence.

Because that’s the bit people don’t talk about enough. It’s not just the lifts or the times on the board, it’s the version of you that walks in unsure about a movement, and walks out having tried it anyway. Coached through it. Cheered on through it.

That’s the magic for us, especially watching it happen for our wāhine. You’re never doing the hard thing alone here.

Ngā mihi Grace, we bloody love having you in this community.

It sounds like a cliché, but the thing that makes CrossFit gyms special really is the people, the members.

Whether you want someone to roast you your coffee, go on a bike ride with, swim in the sea, or act as a job reference, you’ll find these people in a CrossFit gym.

One of many examples of this at Hypha is Helpful Hamish. He’s always happy to lend a hand with any jobs around the gym, and if he spots something before we do, you’ll often catch him quietly getting stuck into a bit of DIY.

Here’s a shot of him in action post workout.

Ngā mihi to Hamish, and to all our members, for making Hypha so special 🙏

Ever wondered what a simple CrossFit class looks like? Today we’ve got classic CrossFit intervals, followed by some basic accessory strength work.

Simple, not easy.

Movement for life. CrossFit for every decade.

Just over two years ago, this space was an empty mechanic’s shop. Concrete floor, roller doors, and a lot of imagination.

We spent months building it out ourselves, ropes hung, rigs bolted down, floors laid, before the first workout ever happened. A lot of early mornings and late nights went into turning a workshop into a home for training.

But the real story of these two years isn’t the fit out. It’s the people. Members who walked in nervous for their first class and left with PBs, friendships, and a stronger body. Coaches who grew from members into leaders. Some faces who’ve moved on to new cities or new chapters, and some who’ve been here from day one and never left.

What hasn’t changed is why we started Hypha. We’re not here to just chase the biggest PB for its own sake. We’re here to give people the best hour of their day, one that sets them up for the next decade and the one after that. Hauora, longevity, and community, that’s still the whole point.

Here’s to the whānau who’ve been part of this journey so far, and the ones still to come. Ngā mihi nui to everyone who’s turned up, put in the mahi, and made this place what it is.

Heavy days. Every now and then. On purpose. The science is clear - strength training is one of the best investments you can make in your long-term health. We take it seriously so you don’t have to figure it out alone.

One of the hardest parts of running a gym is watching great people leave. It’s also one of the nicest things.

Today we said goodbye to Monica at her “official” last class, (unofficial not last class,) before she heads home to Ireland for a year. The class was full, old members came back for this one, and after the workout we shared coffee and brownies and a lot of craic.

You come in for the fitness and you leave with a community that shows up for you, celebrates you, and sends you off properly when it’s time to go.

Monica has been a stalwart of the Hypha whānau since she walked through the door. She’s always at class with a smile on her face, she’s the one everyone’s chasing in a running workout, and she’s an absolute legend.

SlĂĄn Monica, go n-Ă©irĂ an bĂłthar leat ☘

Ngā mihi nui, Caitlin! We love having you in class, whether you’re on the floor as a member or coaching as our intern. So stoked you found your way back to CrossFit, and even happier it was with us. If you’re on the fence about starting, this is your sign đŸ’Ș

We love being part of Te Ohu Kaiwharawhara - the business collective supporting the restoration of Kia Mouriora Te Kaiwharawhara.

Dr Nate Rigler is the absolute legend who leads this work and it’s such a privilege to play a small part in this restoration work. Te Kaiwharawhara whaitua is the largest in Wellington City and the only one with a semi-natural estuary connected to Wellington Harbour.

Last week we planted over 100 kindly donated plants around the stream - just awesome. Alongside Zealandia we run clean up and planting sessions throughout the year (and we put on a free workout alongside them) because caring for our backyard deeply matters to us.

He tangata, he tangata, he tangata. It’s the people, it’s the people, it’s the people.

On Saturday night our facility was transformed and our whānau came together for our Mid Winter Christmas Pot Luck, and it might just be one of our favourite Hypha nights yet.

A room full of good food, good people, and so much manaakitanga. It’s moments like these that remind us why we do this. And with our two year anniversary landing this Wednesday, the timing felt pretty special too.

To everyone who came along, brought a dish, and stayed to help pack down, thank you.

Nights like this are what make Hypha what it is.

Ngā mihi!

Every first-timer, every time. 😅 Big room, big whiteboard, big “wait, what do I do with this bar.” The coaches walk you through everything - every single time, not just day one.

That’s the actual value - you’re always learning something new, and your brain and body both benefit from that (constantly varied movement is genuinely good for you, not just a CrossFit slogan). Come try it, we’ll walk you through everything. Link in bio.

PMID: 38987617 - CzyĆŒ et al., 2024, Scientific Reports. Meta-analysis of 54 studies on “contextual interference” - comparing varied/mixed-up practice against repetitive, blocked practice. Varied practice showed a statistically significant, medium benefit for motor skill retention overall, and the effect was even stronger in adults and older adults specifically than in young people.
