PARKINSONS AND POWER PLATE THERAPY
Another valuable exercise machine that has been scientifically researched is the Power Plate which we use here regularly with clients who have Parkinsons.
It has been mentioned that after being on the power plate their legs feel lighter for the day and it helps with cramps at night which is all partly related to Parkinsons. It also helps with their balance.
Additional light weights can be added which helps maintain muscle and strength.
This info below gives a good insight as to its positive effects on those suffering from Parkinsons and help support daily independence.
A reminder, that again, not all things are created equally and that applies to vibration machines, hence why Power Plate is medically patended.
Parkinson’s Disease and Whole Body Vibration

This week we are looking into movement that can support people with Parkinsons. Starting off with Pilates.
Parkinsons is the second most common neurodegenerative disease in the world.
Some research into the use of Pilates for people with Parkinsons has shown to increase strength, functional movement, balance, and helps lengthen the muscles, fascia, ligaments etc.
Parkinsons tightens the body and pulls everything inwards, whereas specific Pilates exercises can open the body the other way.
With someone who has Parkinsons, one of the key components of Classical Pilates is the positive impact on your nervous system. It requires focus and a total mind body connection.
It is however important to remember that not all Pilates is created equally.
In Classical Pilates there is a lot of flexion (forward bending). Extension exercises and hip stabilisation improves the gait and this is of key importance to a body that has Parkinson’s.
You must be mindful who you start your journey with. Exercises need to be adapted for the person so that in the end the best outcome and quality of life for the client is the goal.
