🎯🔥 ELITE LEADS DON’T JUST PLAY GOOD BOWLS… THEY PLAY SMART ONES. 🔥🎯

One of the biggest differences between developing players and high-level leads? 👀

Elite leads understand that not every “miss” is a bad bowl.

Sometimes the bowl that doesn’t touch the jack…
✅ blocks a danger line
✅ protects the back
✅ changes the available grass
✅ creates scoreboard pressure
✅ forces the opposition to rethink everything

That’s advanced bowls intelligence 💥

Beginners often chase perfection.
Experienced skips value POSITION and PRESSURE.

Because in competitive bowls:
🎯 A smart miss is often better than a reckless toucher.

The best leads think:
👉 “What problems does this bowl create for the opposition?”
—not just—
👉 “Did I touch the jack?”

💡 Every bowl should have a purpose.

This is the type of tactical thinking that wins tight matches and frustrates strong opponents 👏🔥

Ever wonder why you lose to that one bowler, even when you feel like you're playing better? 🤔

It’s probably not their delivery. It's their hidden habits between shots.

Most players switch off the moment the bowl leaves their hand. 😴 Elite players do the opposite. They're constantly collecting data, planning their next move, and winning the mental game. 🧠

Over a match, these small things create a MASSIVE advantage.

Here's what the best bowlers do when they're not even bowling:

👀 They Watch EVERYTHING: Every bowl (yours AND your opponent's) is a piece of data. They’re analyzing green speed, line changes, and rink conditions. They aren't spectating; they're studying.

🧠 They Control the "Headspace": One bad bowl doesn't lose a game, but a bad reaction to it can. Top players reset instantly. They accept mistakes without spiraling, staying calm and present. Their worst enemy doesn't live between their own two ears.

🎯 They Prepare BEFORE the Mat: By the time they step up to bowl, they’ve already visualized the shot, felt the required weight, and assessed the head. Average players only start thinking when it's their turn. Good bowlers are already committed to a plan.

🤝 They Communicate with PURPOSE: (In pairs & teams) Their communication is clear, calm, and constructive. No blame, just solutions. They build confidence, they don't spread panic. "Same shot, just a touch more weight" vs. "Don't do what I just did." See the difference?

The game of bowls is won and lost in the small moments most players ignore. It’s not just a physical game; it's a decision-making game.

Which of these hidden habits will YOU focus on in your next game? Let us know in the comments! 👇

Good Afternoon,
Thank you for entering this weekend’s Bowls Wanganui Inc Academy 2‑4‑2 Tournament. We are very much looking forward to hosting you at Laird Park Bowling Club, and we extend a warm welcome to all players, especially our visiting teams travelling to join us. The current forecast for the weekend is looking favourable, and we anticipate an enjoyable and competitive two days of bowls. Laird Park Bowling Club is located at 92 Peat Street, Wanganui.
We do wish to advise you of a couple of unavoidable changes to the original tournament arrangements. Due to several late withdrawals, we have only been able to field 20 teams instead of the planned 26. As a result, the prize structure has been adjusted, and payouts will now be awarded to the top six teams, rather than the top ten.
Additionally, we had intended to provide a sausage sizzle as part of the day’s catering. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, this will no longer be possible. Players will need to provide their own lunch, and we sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.
We appreciate your understanding and flexibility. Our committee and volunteers remain committed to delivering a well‑run, enjoyable tournament, and we look forward to welcoming you onto the greens this weekend.
