A huge congratulations to everyone who was recognised at our recent Whanganui Tennis Club Prizegiving

It was awesome to celebrate the effort, improvement, sportsmanship, and achievements of our players across the season. From our juniors through to our seniors, there has been a huge amount of growth and involvement around the club this year.

A big thank you as well to all of our volunteers, coaches, parents, supporters, and committee members who help make everything possible both on and off the court.

Fred Seddon Memorial Trophy
After a drizzly start to the day, the sun came out โ€” and so did our 16 70+ tennis stars, every one of them looking happy to be there.

The competition was strong, none more so than the final between Lynne Campbell and Colin Perfect against Susan Johnston and Tim Clarke. The large audience was busy watching and chatting, but over the last three games there was complete silence as Lynne and Colin fought back from 5โ€“1 down to win the competition.

Well done to all the competitors, and to Bronwyn Aitken for organising and running the morning so successfully.

On Sunday May 3rd, thirteen pairs competed in perfect autumn sunshine for the A and B Grade Mixed Doubles Club Championship titles.

In the B Grade, defending champions
Albie Menehira and Ann Fleming fought hard to retain their title, but Tony Holmes and his superstar newcomer partner Caroline Steele proved too strong a pairing, claiming the championship with a convincing 9-1 victory.
In the B Grade back draw final, Robert and Linda Scott battled it out against Bronwyn Atkins and Graham Barr, taking the win 9-4.

The A Grade final between Mike and Rachel Cronin and Doug Ireton and Karen Cranston had spectators on the edge of their seats. Defending champions Mike and Rachel were determined not to surrender their title without a serious battle. At 8-7, with the pressure at its highest, Doug held his nerve and served out the match to secure the championship 9-7.
All four players displayed outstanding doubles skill, experience and composure in an exciting final.

Last Saturday our singles finalists battled it out in three entertaining matches.

In the Womenโ€™s A Grade, Carolyn McIntyre and Rachel Cronin both showed consistency and determination, fighting for every point right to the end. After two hard fought sets, Rachel came away with the win 7-5 6-4.

In the Menโ€™s B Grade, Tom Egan used his slice and shot selection to take the first set comfortably 6-2. Tony Holmes fought back in the second set with his big serve and solid ground strokes, edging it 7-6 before going on to win the super tiebreak 10-5.

In the Menโ€™s A Grade, Craig Davey and Sam Butters were closely matched in the opening set, with Sam edging it 7-5. Samโ€™s shot selection, ability to build points and consistency gave him the advantage in the second set, which he won 6-4 to secure the match.
