“🏆🚣‍♀️🌟 What a day at the Hoe Tonga Secondary Schools Regional Champs 2024! 🌟🚣‍♂️🏆

Huge congratulations to our incredible club teens, Kean, Xavier, Mia, and Jordy, who paddled with Cullinane College and achieved outstanding results!

Mia and Xavier kicked off the day with stellar performances in their W1 singles races, achieving personal best times and both securing spots in the championship finals.

🥈 Mia showcased her improvements and clinched a well-deserved Silver

Xavier fought his way to a very tight 4th place finish, with his competitors being less than 1 second of difference across the line!

From here they moved onto the W6’s teams races, which were 250m straights and 500m turns.

🥈🥈In the Boys J16’s races, Kean, Xavier, and Jordy displayed phenomenal teamwork alongside their Cullinane peers, securing Silver in both the straights and turns championship finals.

Jordy even stepped up to steer for the J19’s team, demonstrating exceptional skill and versatility!

🥉🥉Mia added her skills to the Cullinane Girls J16s, and their team earned an impressive 3rd place in both the straights and turns championship finals.

With up to 6 races each in a single day, these athletes truly blazed a trail of excellence!

Kia kaha tonu koutou, the journey doesn’t end here—next stop: Secondary Nationals in Rotorua from the 18th to the 22nd of this month! 🏅💪

Let’s keep the momentum going and make waves on the national stage!

On Friday Te Ringa Miti Tai Heke Waka Ama Club was lucky enough to host Sport Whanganui staff on a team building exercise. Helpers for the day were Paul Thompson, Gill Potaka-Osborne, Tuera Pirikahu, Awanui-a-rangi Pirikahu-Tawhitapou, Hinewaiatarua Pirikahu- Joseph.

Each of the staff were put into a group; Piwakawaka, Kiwi and Tui. Throughout the day each group participated in activities at Pūtiki Marae, as well as waka ama. The waka ama session consisted of an overview of the history of the club and the importance of our connection with Te Awa Tupua.

Furthermore, they learnt about what we do to be safe on the awa, parts of a waka and hoe. Juddy Gush started our first paddle of the day with karakia.
Each team was competitive, Piwakawaka went in at high tide so were the best at surfing the waves, Kiwi were the quickest learners going through the bridge up to Calliope whilst Kiwi had the best change overs paddling between Town Bridge and Cobham Bridge.

It was a day to remember filled with laughter and fun.
Thank you for letting us share these photos. 🧡

🥈 Incredible teamwork at its finest! 🚣‍♂️

Our very own Xavier Rayner and Ratana Waka Ama Club’s - Rere Wallace teamed up for the weekend, blending talent from Aotearoa and Tahiti into team Painapo 🍍to compete in the J16 10km race at the Takapuna Cup 🏆

Their first competition on ocean water, and first time meeting their Tahitian team mates with their determination and skill, they claimed an impressive 2nd place! 🎉
