Martial Arts Academy What is BJJ? BJJ permits a wide variety of techniques to take the fight to the ground after taking a grip.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu emphasizes taking an opponent to the ground and utilizing ground fighting techniques and submission holds involving joint-locks and chokeholds also found in numerous other arts with or without ground fighting emphasis. The premise is that most of the advantage of a larger, stronger opponent comes from superior reach and more powerful strikes, both of which are somewhat negated

I am so happy to got to spend 4 days with one of my favorite people of all time. Joseph勇Davis. We spent a bunch of time between coaching catching up and I regret not having more time with him while I am in Japan.

Bit of a gratitude post.
Tonight was the Japan worlds teams last training together.
It was really just a bit of team building, mental training and a bit of a debrief before we all head overseas. I've watched everyone pull together to support one another at the tournaments and it's amazing to see the team come together over the last 9 months.
Everyone has had to overcome some major hurdles to get to where they are.
We've had injuries, losses, sandbagged out divisions, inexplicable referee decisions. The parents and extended family have had their kids backs the whole time, driving to Auckland, paying for tape, baking cakes, and often acting as proxy coaches when 3 or 4 of the kids compete at rhe same time. Thank you. We've sold enough sausages to feed everyone in Whangarei 3x over. We ran raffles, door knocked, and leant on our friends to help raise funds to get everyone there. We hosted a quiz night which was out of this world. They say it's the journey that matters not the results. The journey we have embarked on this year has been a memorable one and I hope our time in Japan creates even more lifetime memories. It's a privilege to have spent the last 9 months working together with everyone on our goals and I am excited to see you reach your potential next week. See you all in Japan. 頑張ろう。

We are the ones doing 6am training sessions.
Surround yourself with people who love training martial arts enough to get up at 5am to do it.
Not when its convenient.

🏆 WINTER CHALLENGE 2026 LEGENDS!!! ❄️

30 classes. 10 weeks. No excuses.

Eight of you backed it up and actually got it done:

🥇 Mark McCluggage 46/30
🥈 James Cherrie 40/30
🥉 Jarred Scott 36/30
🏆 Glenn Smith 32/30
🏆 Lee Kaire 32/30
🏆 Pablo Hamber 31/30
🏆 Carmello Crichton Marsh 30/30
🏆 Seb Roselt 30/30

Here's the number that matters: only 10% of our adult members hit the target.

That's not a knock on anyone - life gets in the way, work gets busy, kids get sick.
But it tells you exactly why this challenge exists.
Talent doesn't show up to a 6am class in the middle of winter. Discipline does.
The mats don't care how you feel that day - they only care if you showed up.

Every name on that list didn't have a secret.
They just didn't skip class.
Week after week, when it was easier to stay home, they came in anyway.
That's the whole game.

To the eight of you: well done.
You didn't just win a limited edition T shirt, you proved something that only 1 in 10 could.

To everyone else: the mats aren't going anywhere.
A new challenge is coming, and the only thing separating you from that leaderboard next time is showing up when it's inconvenient.

Consistency beats motivation every single time.

See you on the mats. 🥋

It's our final week of our winter challenge.
We have had 65 adults participating in our winter challenge.
Less than 4% of people have made it so far.
7 more have the chance to complete it.
Can they make it?
