The worldwide success of Shotokan karate is the result of two generations of the Funakoshi family. Gichin Funakoshi is often called the Father of Modern Karate because he introduced Okinawan karate to mainland Japan in 1922 and promoted it as a path of character development, discipline, and self-improvement. His famous principle, "Karate ni sente nashi" ("There is no first attack in karate"), reflected his belief that karate should build better people, not just better fighters. While Gichin spread karate and established its philosophy, Yosh*taka Funakoshi reshaped its technical side. He modernized training methods, developed the powerful stances and kicks associated with Shotokan, and helped create the style's distinctive identity. Together, the father gave karate its soul, while the son gave Shotokan its form. Without Gichin, karate might never have spread across Japan and the world. Without Yosh*taka, modern Shotokan might never have become the powerful and recognizable style practiced by millions today.
