🧠 BCAAs for Endurance: Science vs. Marketing
When designing race-day fueling strategies, BCAAs (Leucine, Isoleucine, Valine) are heavily marketed—but the peer-reviewed sports science tells a different story. The empirical evidence showing that BCAA supplementation actually improves endurance performance is remarkably weak.
Before your athletes sacrifice pocket space or gut comfort, here is the direct breakdown.
🔬 Theory vs. Reality
Central Fatigue: While BCAAs theoretically compete with tryptophan to delay mental fatigue, well-fueled athletes consuming adequate carbohydrates inherently achieve this mechanism. Additional BCAAs are largely redundant.
Muscle Preservation: Isolated BCAAs during exercise do not meaningfully protect lean mass or alter net muscle balance without a complete spectrum of essential amino acids (EAAs).
Carbohydrate is King: Exogenous carbohydrates remain the undisputed driver of performance. The incremental impact of BCAAs in competition is minimal to non-existent.
