Número en Japonés 🥋

Japanese Counting in Karate: From Ichi to Ju

Learning karate is not only about mastering punches, kicks, blocks, and kata. It is also about understanding the language and culture that surround the martial art. One of the simplest and most useful things every karate student can learn is how to count in Japanese.

In the dojo, Japanese numbers are commonly used during training. Instructors may count repetitions, organize exercises, coordinate movements, or establish rhythm during kihon, kata, and conditioning. Knowing these numbers allows students to follow instructions more naturally and feel more connected to traditional dojo practice.

The first number is Ichi, meaning one. It is followed by Ni, meaning two, and San, meaning three. These are among the first Japanese words many karate students learn.

Number four is commonly pronounced Yon or Shi, depending on the context. In many martial arts settings, Yon is often preferred because Shi can also be associated with the word for death. Number five is Go, followed by Roku for six.

Number seven can be pronounced Nana or Shichi. During training, Nana is sometimes preferred because it is easier to distinguish clearly when the instructor is counting quickly. Number eight is Hachi, number nine is Kyū, and number ten is Jū.

Although memorizing these words may seem simple, counting in Japanese can become an important part of dojo discipline. Imagine an instructor calling, “Ichi! Ni! San! Shi!” while students perform techniques together. Everyone must maintain timing, concentration, posture, and breathing. The counting creates rhythm and helps transform individual movements into coordinated practice.

However, Japanese counting should not be treated merely as decoration. Karate developed within a specific cultural and historical environment, and language is one way to appreciate that heritage. Learning even a few Japanese terms demonstrates respect for the traditions behind the art.

The numbers also remind us that progress in karate happens one step at a time. Ichi represents the beginning. Then comes Ni, San, and the next stages. There is no shortcut to mastery. Students repeat basic techniques thousands of times, gradually improving balance, timing, speed, precision, breathing, and mental control.

A black belt does not represent the end of learning. It represents another beginning. Just as counting continues from one to ten, a martial artist continues developing throughout the journey.

So, the next time you hear a karate instructor counting in Japanese, listen carefully. These simple words carry more than numbers. They create rhythm, encourage discipline, preserve tradition, and connect modern students with generations of martial artists who trained before them.

Ichi. Ni. San. Yon. Go. Roku. Nana. Hachi. Kyū. Jū.

Learn the language. Respect the culture. Strengthen your karate.
