The Gendarmerie on Nuku Hiva is open on Monday and Thursday mornings for entry and exit formalities. The Gendarmerie on Hiva Oa is open each morning for entry and exit clearances.
Please note all visiting yachts are obliged to pay for trash services by visiting the mayor’s office on Nuku Hiva. The fee is 1050 xpf per month. Same for the water if you use the local water supply. This also applies on Hiva Oa.
When at anchor in the bays, do NOT through your organic waste into the water as it often washes up on the beaches.
Notes:
The municipal water in the Bay of Taiohae and in the bay or Atuona is not potable from the taps, don’t drink it nor put it in your water tanks, it will turn.
Please use the large, designated trash receptacles in the designated area at the base of the driveway entering the parking area. They are just across the street from the vegetable market. On Hiva Oa, on the sea wall. In any case never leave trash bags on the ground as the stray dogs will make a mess of them.
Discharging holding tanks into the bays is prohibited and the use of holding tanks is required by law. All discharge of black water is to be done a minimum of two nautical miles offshore.
Wear what you like on the boat and on the beach, but please put some clothes on when ashore and going to any of the local businesses, this applies to both men and women.
