| Mt Wilhem Race Attracts Over 400 Runners

With 400 runners the Mt Wilhelm Race was a milestone sporting event in the calendar of Chimbu Province with enthusiastic participants in all age groups eager for the trophies and the cash prize money. Minister Kulang, while presenting the uniforms to the runners, outlined the importance of the race and the contribution it brings, not only into the sport of marathon.
He said the event also encourages wide participation from all other provinces as well as international runners and fitting to generate revenues in the tourism sector of the province.
Kulang said, “The race will create spin of benefits for the province and add on to Mt William tourism attraction.” Chairman of Mt Wilhelm Race, Paul Komba said Chimbu Province is a leader of marathon running in the country with significant contribution of gold medals in the 2015 Pacific Games.
There were six runners in a team stationed at six locations and each runner ran a distance of 7km before finishing at the foot of infamous Mt Wilhelm.

The Mt Wilhelm Race today was officially opened by the Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Tobias Kulang. The Mt Wilhelm race will be a gruelling 42km marathon from Kundiawa to the foot of Mt Wilhelm in the Kundiawa-Gembogl District. Minister Tobias Kulang, speaking at the official opening, said the Mt Wilhelm race will promote sport tourism and allow the people of Kundiawa-Gembogl to benefit economically with the race this year bringing in a total of K500,000. The initiative was set up by Tourism Promotional Authority and Member for Kundiawa-Gembogl District, Tobias Kulang, to promote Sport Tourism.
The race received 60% sponsorship from private sponsors, and Minister Kulang says this shows the potential of public private partnership for Tourism...

Mothers from Umbai @ station 1 dancing n singing to compliment the 2016 Mt. Wilhelm race. Wow!
30 minutes from now the Mt Wilhelm race will commences from Kundiawa Dickinson oval and finishes at Mt Wilhelm High School. The 42km relay marathon, a total of 52 teams which gives us a cumulative 312 participants running the race. First sets of 6 are ready and really pumped up to take the challenge as I can tell from the lines of their body.
This event is huge as we anticipated, we also has 29 cultural dancers to sing dance to compliment the race. Today the land transport will be on halt for a while especially Gembogl road.
Meanwhile, we are having the launching of the Mt. Wilhelm national park development plan to be launched by the Minister for Environment and conservation Hon. John Pundri and of course presentation of the cash prize to all top three winners at each categories male and female plus first 5 finishing team. We are expecting a big turn out today. If you in simbu n have nothing to do today come around be part of the race experience the moment So u don't miss the next race next year.
RACE POLICY AND GUIDELINES RaCE
1. This is a 6 x 7 km marathon relay race and there will be 3 categories for both male and female divisions.
The race comprises of 3 Categories and they are as follows:
I. Category 1- open category for both national and international athletics teams.
II. Category 2- High, Secondary & TVET school Teams – (Simbu Prov only.)
III. Category 3- Primary school Teams (Kundiawa/Gembogl schools only.)
2. All teams must pay a registration fee of K300 into the Mt.Wilhelm Race account number 7007926681. Receipt to be submitted with registration forms to the management team for team registration prior to the closing date.
3. The closing date for the registration is 30th of September, 2016. Late registration will not be accepted.
4. All individual athletes must fill the indemnity forms. The information on the forms must be true and it must be signed and witnessed by a priest/pastor/ councilor from the athlete’s respective local areas. The forms must have the stamp of a local church/council or a recognized government institution.
5. IMPORTANT: All athletes must undergo proper medical examination from recognized medical Doctors or Health Extension Officers and the medical reports must be submitted as part of registration.
6. All team registration fees are non-refundable.
7. All athletes will wear Mt. Wilhelm Race issued uniform t-shirts.
8. Change of athletes before the race or during the race will have the team being forfeited.
9. Batons Information-An official arm band will be issued for runners to pass on to their team members at every station.
10. A runner will not be allowed to run more than one station.
11. For category 1 the age requirement is 21 years and above. The High, Secondary and TVET schools must be between 17 to 21 years. The Primary school athletes’ age requirement is 14 to 17 years.
12. Every athlete must wear a proper sportswear and foot wear. A runner that removes the race issued shirt during the race will have his/her team forfeited.
13. It is strictly prohibited for athletes to take any drugs and alcohol prior or during the race. If caught, than the team that has the athlete implicated will be forfeited.
14. Athletes must not obstruct or distract other athlete before or during the race.
15. The race technical expertise stationed at every station will make final decisions if there is or are any technical errors or problems. NO TEAM OFFICIALS OR SUPPORTERS TO DICTATE AND DECIDE ON ANY DECISIONS BEFORE, DURING OR AFTER THE RACE.

The MWR is a brain child of the Honorable Tobias Kulang, MP and Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture. It is a vision of the Kundiawa/Gembogl District Mission and Vision statement to build more professional athletes from the Electorate to be National and International Athletes. Secondly, to encourage people of all ages in the Electorate to live a healthy living. Thirdly, to encourage and promote tourism in the Electorate so many National and International professional Marathon runners can participate in such a high altitude race.
This Policy is written to guide the Athlete’s, Race Management team, Kundiawa/Gembogl District Administration, Office of the Honorable Tobias Kulang, MP and Minister for Tourism, Arts & Culture, PNG National Athletics Union, Provincial Sports Office, Schools, Sponsors and other stakeholders to participate and partner with the Mt.Wilhelm Race (MWR) in a professional approach annually.
The Policy is formulated to guide the event to be successful. The Mt.Wilhelm Race (MWR) valued more than half a million Kina and is a one day annual event. However, it requires plenty of preparations from both the Race Management Team and the participants (athletes).
MWR is a 6x 7km Race which starts from Dickson’s field in Kundiawa and ends at the foot of Mt. Wilhelm (kegesuglo airstrip) which rises at an altitude of 2880 meters above sea level. The race is a marathon relay race, each team consists of 6 runners running a distance of 7km each. The runners are categorized under 3 categories: category 1 is open for any current national and international athletics team 21 years and above, category 2 is for High, Secondary, TVET schools in Simbu Province only. The category 3 is Primary school athletes from within the Kundiawa/Gembogl electorate only.
It is a requirement that all the Athletes must comply to the Policy Guideline to be eligible for the Mt. Wilhelm Race. Any Athlete who breaches the Policy guideline will automatically be terminated and the team’s registration fee will be forfeited.

THE MT WILHELM RACE
5th - 7th 2016
The Mt. Wilhlem Race is a 42km relay marathon, which starts from Kundiawa and ends at Keglesuglo Airstrip at the foot of Mt. Wilhlem. The Race is a semiprofessional and to be staged under 3 categories. The race is an initiative of the Kundiawa Gembogl District Development Authority to commemorate the launching of the Mt. Wilhelm Natioinal Park Tourism Development Plan on the 7th October.
“Our vision is to establish an annual community sporting event that serves as a development pathway for Chimbu athletes and to encourage physical fitness activities and healthy lifestyles amongst our people. Through the Mt Wilhelm Race we hope to uncover raw talent in our rural communities and to give opportunities to our youths to engage in meaningful activities.
The race will have three categories;
1: Primary School (for schools in Kundiawa Gembogl District only)
2: High, Secondary & TVET schools (only for Simbu Province)
3: Open (for National and International)
Each Team will have six separate runners male and female for each category running 7km each.
