Over time, the sand inside a Pool Sand Filter "CAKES" up with silt, mud, etc, which makes it difficult to remove all the debri during a normal "BACKWASH". The Pool Water just goes around the cake and out to the Waste Discharge when you run the Filter on Backwash.
It is sometimes necessary to remove all the sand from your filter and breakdown the clumps and wash away all the silt manually.
The sand inside your filter can have a lifespan of 5-7 years...
