Round 5 Detailed Race Report -
Round 5 of the Moni Plus Port Moresby Kart Championship on the weekend was full of highs and lows for several drivers. But first, let’s take a moment to appreciate how this club has risen from the dead after a ten-year nap. All thanks to Yiannis Nicolau, who, instead of basking in his own racing glory, decided to play the role of karting messiah. This guy has won more championships than he can count (math might not be his strong suit), and now he’s giving his time to make sure the next generation of drivers can experience the sheer joy of racing—and probably the heartbreak of losing—right here in Papua New Guinea. Without Yiannis, this club would still be nothing more than a dusty dream. And let’s not forget our past and present club members, and most importantly, our sponsors. Moni Plus, our naming sponsor for the third year running, is supported by Heineken 0.0 (because drinking and driving don’t mix) and FedEx (when it absolutely, positively has to be there overnight—just not your kart parts). The club also want to thank TVWAN for your excellent coverage of kart racing events. Your support plays a crucial role in promoting this exciting sport and inspiring young Papua New Guineans to pursue their passions and achieve their dreams. Without the Sponsors, TVWAN, Teams and the club lead by Yiannis, your dedication to supporting and showcasing local talent is truly appreciated. Thank you for helping to nurture the next generation of champions.
The highlight of the year so far? The ladies racing with the men in a new mixed category. They've shown they can hang with the best, shaking up the championship with their speed and relentless determination. Meanwhile, the rest of the pack is closing in on the top four drivers, almost breaking into the 49-second range. It’s like watching a tortoise and hare race where the tortoises have finally discovered turbo boosters.
Qualifying started with Group A, featuring Chris Chan from Team Ontrack Racing, Dan Geoghegan and Jess Geoghegan from SBS Electrical Racing, and Chris Olsen from Helios Racing, who finally decided to show up after missing the last three races. Surprisingly, Chan was off the pace due to some front-end issues, clocking in the high 51s. It's only the second time in about 30 races that Chan has qualified outside the top four. The Geoghegans set a blistering pace, making Group B sweat more than a politician at a truth-telling contest.
Group A Results:
1. Dan Geoghegan (SBS Electrical Racing): 48.910
2. Jess Geoghegan (SBS Electrical Racing): 49.824
3. Chris Chan (Team Ontrack Racing): 51.914
4. Chris Olsen (Helios Racing): 52.293
Next up, Group B with Leon Nguyen, Kristi Homann, Matthew Knight, Clint Ah Sam, and Andy Butler. The session was delayed because Nguyen’s kart decided it needed a dramatic malfunction. He thought he fixed it until he tried to turn into the hairpin at turn 13, only to find his kart had other plans—like going straight. He managed to fix it by holding the steering rod manually for the rest of qualifying. Despite this, he was the fastest in Group B, even with a failed DAS (Dual-Axis Steering) system. Ah Sam, meanwhile, had mechanical issues with his turbos, because why not add some more drama?
Group B Results:
1. Leon Nguyen (Team Buzz Racing): 50.632
2. Kristi Homann (Mountain Dew/Ontrack): 50.786
3. Andy Butler (Godzilla Racing): 51.629
4. Matthew Knight (SBS Electrical Racing): 53.246
5. Clint Ah Sam (Bula Racing): DNQ
Overall Qualifying Results:
1. Dan Geoghegan: 48.910
2. Jess Geoghegan: 49.824
3. Leon Nguyen: 50.632
4. Kristi Holmann: 50.786
5. Andy Butler: 51.629
6. Chris Chan: 51.914
7. Chris Olsen: 52.293
8. Matthew Knight: 53.246
9. Clint Ah Sam: DNQ
Heat 1: It was a clean start for everyone as Dan and Jess led the way into the first corner. Nguyen got squeezed out on the first corner, allowing Homann and Chan to capitalize as they headed down to Turn 4, the Harijuku Hairpin, which is usually full of surprises. This time, everyone handled it with the grace of figure skaters, if figure skaters drove karts. Dan pulled a gap, followed by Jess, Homann, Chan, and Nguyen. Nguyen was all over Chan like a rash, giving him a few love taps to hurry him up, but Chan was clearly struggling with his tires. Nguyen was relentless, like a chef trying to escape a food coma until lap 4, when his electrics failed and his engine cut out. Chief engineer Albert E. Doc later confirmed that the flux capacitor failed due to incorrect hydrogen isotope fusion. Should’ve used E=mc².
Butler, driving like his kart was on a caffeine high, started closing in on Chan. Olsen and Knight were having a mini-battle, with Knight aiming for the title of "The Bull Giraffe" since Corey Van Genernnnnerrrrannnnnnnn relinquish that title after retiring from the sport prematurely when he was forced off the track by a two-foot gerbil in season 1, Ah Sam eventually got on track with a spare kart lent by Dan Geoghegan, usually driven by future champion Jeremy Fry.
Heat 2: Heat 2 is always exciting, like watching a slow-motion car chase. Starting grid:
1. Clint Ah Sam
2. Matthew Knight
3. Chris Olsen
4. Andy Butler
5. Chris Chan
6. Kristi Homann
7. Jess Geoghegan
8. Dan Geoghegan
9. Leon Nguyen (DNS)
The flag drops, and Knight jumps ahead of Ah Sam to take the lead, but the big movers were Dan Geoghegan and Chan, both quickly hitting the NoS bottle to gain positions. They slingshot down the outside, instantly gaining a few spots by the Turn 4 Harijuku Hairpin. Amidst the first-lap mayhem, Chan and Geoghegan quietly made their way to the front. Chan took the lead on lap 2 from Knight, but close behind was Geoghegan, who was playing bumper cars with Ah Sam. The duo flew through the corners like synchronized swimmers on wheels, with Geoghegan eventually tapping Ah Sam on the t**h to secure second place.
Behind them, Homann and Jess Geoghegan had front-row seats to the action. Jess was pressuring Homann, who overshot her braking point on lap 3, giving Jess the opportunity to pull off a slick undercut and take third place. These two ladies were proving that they could give the guys a serious run for their money. With laps running out, Dan threw everything he had at Chan but couldn’t make it stick. Chan kept his cool and held off Dan, who drove like "orange lives matter."
Heat 3: Final grid:
1. Dan Geoghegan
2. Jess Geoghegan
3. Leon Nguyen
4. Kristi Holmann
5. Andy Butler
6. Chris Chan
7. Chris Olsen
8. Matthew Knight
9. Clint Ah Sam
Dan Geoghegan and Chan took off into the first corner, with the rest falling in line heading down to the Harijuku Hairpin. Nguyen’s flux capacitor issues persisted, forcing him to retire yet again, possibly contemplating kebab options for dinner. Out front, Dan and Chan pulled away, with Jess Geoghegan and Homann holding on within striking distance. These two ladies posted impressive lap times, with Jess’s fastest at 49.571 and Homann at 49.227.
Ah Sam had a terrible day until the last race, hanging in there and taking third spot on the podium thanks to the benevolent kava gods. Butler struggled with his flux capacitor issues, while Knight appeared to be more interested in perfecting his skiing technique.

Final Results:
1st Dan Geoghegan, 2nd Chris Chan, 3rd Clint Ah Sam
Ladies: 1st Jess Geoghegan, 2nd Kristi Homann
