WABAG, ENGA - The Wabag Rugby Football League (WRFL) has secured a new sponsor for its 2026 competition, with Mr. Lyndsay Tei Abal officially announcing his sponsorship during Round 2, Game 12 at Mommers Oval in Wabag, Enga Province, yesterday.
Mr. Abal was officially welcomed at the venue by WRFL officials and players, with WRFL President Mr. Kepakan Pakau formally welcoming him and acknowledging his decision to support the league.
Mr. Pakau thanked the league’s previous sponsors, Coast Guide and Aidiku Arete Foundation, for their support to the Wabag Rugby Football League.
He explained that the league had been looking for a sponsor for the 2026 season after initially having no confirmed sponsor. He thanked Mr. Abal for stepping forward and supporting the competition, players and youths in the community.
Following the sponsorship announcement, the 2026 Wabag Rugby Football League competition will be played as the “Lyndsay Tei Abal Cup.”
Also present at the field was Mr. Thomas Neah, Deputy Chairman of the Enga Provincial Sports Council and a resident, who expressed his appreciation to Mr. Abal for supporting the league.
Mr. Neah said the sponsorship was not only about rugby league but also represented wider support for sports and young people.
He said sports across different codes play an important role in keeping youths actively engaged in positive activities and helping keep them away from illegal activities and other social problems.
Speaking during the occasion, Mr. Lyndsay Tei Abal said he was pleased to be back home and to have the opportunity to give back to his community, particularly to the youths.
Mr. Abal said initiatives such as the Wabag Rugby Football League provide young people with positive social activities and opportunities to stay involved in sport rather than drugs, alcohol and other harmful activities.
He officially announced his sponsorship of the 2026 Wabag Rugby Football League and confirmed that the competition would be played as the Lyndsay Tei Abal Cup.
Although Mr. Abal was in the province for other reasons, he made time to personally attend the venue and make the sponsorship announcement.
Following the official announcement, Mr. Abal was given the honour of officially kicking off the Round 2, Game 12 women's match between the Prum Panthers and Lomban Eagles at Mommers Oval.
The new sponsorship provides a major boost to the Wabag Rugby Football League and highlights the important role of sport in bringing communities together, engaging young people and promoting positive activities in Wabag and across Enga Province.
