No, this isn’t an optical illusion.

20 years ago yesterday, Dave Huckle set the IGFA Men’s 10-kg (20 lb) Line Class World Record with this massive 67.92-kilogram (149-pound, 12-ounce) Nile perch. Dave was trolling a Mann’s 30+ Magnum off of Rubondo Island, Tanzania, when he felt a strong pull. After an epic 55-minute battle, Dave landed the record perch and brought it to Rubondo Island Camp for an official weight.

Bahura [ba-húra] ay salitang Filipino na ang ibig sabihin ay umbol ng korales o coral reefs. Ngunit, hindi ito ang orihinal nitong kahulugan. Ayon sa isang publikasyon ng National Commission for Culture and the Arts sa Sagisag Kultura noong 2005: “Ang bahúra, mula sa Español na bajura, ay umbok ng lupa o buhangin na nakadugtong sa loon ng isang lawas ng tubig o kayâ ay naghihiwalay sa dalawang bahagi gayong tubigan. Sa Filipino naman, karaniwang tinatawag itong buhanginan, hapilay, o rompeolas. Malimit namang ipantawag ito sa bangkota o coral reef ng mga hindi marunong sa Español at nag-aakala na “bahura” ang tumpok ng korales sa Español.”

Ang wika, gaya ng tao, ayg nagbabago at sumusunod sa hamon ng panahon. May mga salita man tayong hiram sa ibang lahi, ating tandaan na lumalalim ang pagiging Pinot nito sa paglapat ng bawat impot, pantig, at kahulugan ng dating salitang banyaga —- lalo pa’t kung ating aangkinin, ipahmalaki, at laging gagamitin.
