Bullies don’t magically appear. They are not born with cruelty in their veins. Most of the time, they are shaped, slowly, quietly, by what they see and hear at home. A child who grows up watching shouting instead of listening, insults instead of guidance, and fear instead of respect will carry those lessons outside the house. Because for a child, home is the first classroom, and parents are the first teachers.

When anger is normalized, when humiliation is used as discipline, when “because I said so” replaces healthy conversations, a child learns that power means control. Natututo silang ang lakas ay pananakot. They begin to believe that being feared is better than being understood. And when they step into school hallways, and on streets they simply repeat what was rehearsed in their living rooms.

Some children bully because they feel small inside. May mga batang lumaki na kulang sa yakap, kulang sa papuri, at sobra sa puna. So they look for someone smaller to dominate, someone weaker to silence. It becomes their coping mechanism. Panakip sa insecurity ang pananakot.

This does not excuse their behavior. It explains it. Accountability is still necessary. But if we truly want to stop bullying, we must look deeper than detention slips and suspension letters. We must ask what environment raised that behavior. Anong klaseng tahanan ang nagturo na okay lang manakit ng kapwa?

Kindness is also trained at home. Respect is modeled. Empathy is practiced daily. Kapag sa bahay pa lang tinuturuan na ang bata makinig, umunawa, at magpatawad, dala nila iyon sa paaralan at sa lugar na kanilang pupuntahan.

If we want safer schools and safer streets, we must build safer homes. Because before a child becomes a bully in school or in streets, they were first a child learning what love, and power look like.
