THE GOLDEN RULES OF SWIMMING: WHAT EVERY PARENT SHOULD UNDERSTAND 🏊♂️
Bob Bowman, the legendary coach behind champions like Michael Phelps and Léon Marchand, has shown us that greatness is never built overnight.
It is built through process, patience, discipline, consistency, and trust.
And this is something we hope every swimmer, and especially every parent, will understand. ❤️
🚫 WHAT MANY PARENTS GET WRONG
❌ Focusing only on results, instead of the development and the journey.
❌ Expecting fast results without giving the swimmer enough time to develop proper technique.
❌ Comparing your child to other swimmers who may have different strengths, experience, body development, and training backgrounds.
❌ Getting frustrated when progress seems slow. Growth in swimming is not always visible from one competition to another.
❌ Changing coaches or giving up too quickly because the expected results haven't come yet.
❌ Putting pressure on the swimmer after a bad race instead of helping them understand what they can learn from it.
Sometimes, the biggest obstacle isn't the swimmer's ability.
It's the lack of patience around the swimmer.
🏆 THE GOLDEN RULES
🧠 Think Success: Help your swimmer believe in what they can become.
🎯 Set Goals: Focus on short-term improvements while keeping long-term goals in mind.
🔍 Master the Details: Technique, turns, starts, breathing, discipline, and consistency matter.
📚 Keep Learning: Every race, every mistake, and every training session is part of development.
👀 Visualize Success: Teach swimmers to see themselves improving, not just winning.
🤝 TRUST YOUR COACH: A coach sees the bigger picture. Development takes time, and not every lesson immediately appears on the scoreboard.
💪 Be Accountable: Swimmers must learn to take responsibility for their effort, attitude, preparation, and progress.
❤️ A MESSAGE TO PARENTS
Your child does not need you to be their second coach.
They need you to be their biggest supporter.
Don't let one race define your child's ability.
Don't let another swimmer's medal make your child feel like they are behind.
Don't let a temporary plateau convince you that your child isn't improving.
And please don't let impatience make you abandon a process that may still be working.
Swimming is a long journey.
There will be days when your child wins.
There will be days when they lose.
There will be personal bests, disappointing races, breakthroughs, plateaus, injuries, frustrations, and moments when they may even say, "I don't want to swim anymore."
That is where patience and support matter most.
🌱 TRUST THE PROCESS
A young swimmer is not just training to become faster.
They are learning discipline.
They are learning commitment.
They are learning how to handle disappointment.
They are learning how to work hard even when nobody is watching.
They are learning that success doesn't always come immediately.
And these lessons are worth far more than a medal.
So parents, trust your swimmer. Trust your coach. Trust the process.
Let the coach coach.
Let the swimmer swim.
And let the parents provide the encouragement, patience, and support that every young athlete needs.
Because sometimes, the best thing you can say after a difficult race isn't:
"Why didn't you win?"
It's simply:
"I'm proud of you. What did you learn today?" ❤️
Champions aren't built by medals alone.
They are built through discipline, consistency, patience, resilience, and the courage to keep going.
Chase excellence, not perfection. 😉
🌊 Trust the process. The results will come.
