Congratulations to Teodore Josephus “TJ” Matchete – The UC Program’s Off-Court MVP! 🎓🏀

Every successful basketball program has players who deliver on the court, but behind every championship culture is someone who ensures that success extends far beyond the final buzzer.

If there were a Sixth Man Award for the UC Basketball Program, Theodore Josephus “TJ” Matchete would be the unanimous choice.

As the team’s Academics Coordinator, TJ has played a vital role in shaping the future of our student-athletes. He works tirelessly to ensure compliance with academic requirements, takes charge of enrollment concerns, and closely monitors the grades and academic progress of every basketball student-athlete.

His dedication reflects the core mission of the UC Basketball Program—that our athletes should strive not only to become champions on the court but also successful professionals in their chosen fields.

The impressive number of UC basketball student-athletes who have earned their college degrees is, in no small part, a testament to TJ’s commitment, diligence, and genuine concern for the education of every player.

While others measure success in points, rebounds, and assists, TJ’s greatest statistics are diplomas earned, academic milestones achieved, and futures secured.

Congratulations, TJ, on earning your degree! Your quiet leadership, selfless service, and unwavering commitment have made you the UC Program’s true Off-Court MVP. Your legacy will be remembered not only through victories in basketball but through the countless student-athletes whose lives have been transformed because you made education a priority.

Well deserved, Off-Court MVP. The entire UC Basketball family is proud of you.

Congratulations, Niño Jeff “NJ” Atunay, BS Customs Administration!

NJ’s journey is a testament to the power of patience, endurance, and persistence.

As one of the pioneering members of the UC basketball player pool formed after the pandemic in 2022, many expected him to immediately make his mark on the court. Instead, fate had him wait. A serious shoulder injury and intense competition for roster spots meant that he would only earn his place in the official lineup in 2025—after three long years of perseverance.

Three years of waiting is no small feat. Many would have given up, but NJ chose a different path. Rather than allowing disappointment to define him, he turned adversity into opportunity by investing more time in his studies.

That decision paid off. His dedication in the classroom saw him excel, finishing 5th in the Mock Board Examination among the graduating BS Customs Administration students—a remarkable achievement that reflects the same discipline and commitment he brings to basketball.

NJ’s story reminds us that success does not always come according to our own timeline. Sometimes, the waiting season is the preparation season.

Congratulations on earning your Bachelor of Science in Customs Administration. May your resilience continue to open doors, and may your journey inspire future student-athletes to trust the process, embrace every challenge, and never stop working toward their goals.

Congratulations, McSteven Ursal, BS Electrical Engineering!

Known to many as the “Rodman ng Cebu,” McSteven built his reputation as one of the fiercest rebounders in the game. Despite being undersized for the big man position, he proved that rebounding is not measured by height, but by heart, hustle, timing, and relentless determination.

That same passion, however, also made him one of the most misunderstood players in the UC basketball program. His intensity on the court and his constant presence in panalay games led many to believe that basketball was all he cared about.

But behind the relentless competitor was a disciplined student quietly taking on one of the most demanding degree programs—BS Electrical Engineering.

Your story is a reminder that appearances can be deceiving. The same grit that allowed you to outwork taller opponents under the basket also carried you through years of hard work in the classroom.

Today, you celebrate a milestone that many never get to reach: earning your Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering while remaining one of the most passionate competitors to wear the UC jersey. You have proven that passion for the game and excellence in academics can go hand in hand.

Congratulations, Rodman ng Cebu! May this achievement be another rebound that propels you to even greater victories—in the board exams, in your career, and in life.

Congratulations,Luther Gabriel Leonard, BS Information Technology!

Your graduation is a testament to years of hard work, discipline, and unwavering commitment. As one of the original members who helped rebuild the program after the pandemic, you became a cornerstone of a team that reached four consecutive finals, serving as a steady and reliable anchor every step of the way.

What has always set you apart is your consistency. Day after day, you showed up to practice with the same work ethic, focus, and determination, earning the respect of your coaches and teammates. Your discipline, drive, and professionalism made you one of the finest players to wear the program’s colors over the last four years.

Despite your stature and accomplishments on the court, you remained humble. You led not only through your performance but through your example—religiously attending practices, staying committed to your responsibilities, and never losing sight of the importance of your studies.

You have proven that true success is built on character, perseverance, and quiet excellence.

Congratulations, Zareygel “Ajing” Rosano, Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management!

Your journey is a testament to resilience, determination, and unwavering faith in yourself.

You were not recruited, not endorsed, and had no backers. You came in as a walk-on, relying solely on your hard work and perseverance.

Despite being initially ignored and cut from the team, you kept showing up and returning to practice.

For nearly two years, you continued to work, wait, and believe that your opportunity would come.

Through your grit and determination, you eventually earned your place on the team and used your passion for basketball to obtain a college degree that once seemed beyond reach because of financial constraints.

Your diploma is more than an academic achievement—it is the reward for years of sacrifice, persistence, and refusing to give up when others would have.

Your story is an inspiration to every young athlete who dreams of creating opportunities through hard work.
